IIT Bombay Student Death: Priyanka Chaturvedi Questions Action Against Professors Amid Protests

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has questioned whether action against IIT Bombay professors can address the wider concerns raised following the death of student Sahil Wakode. She called for greater attention to the campus environment and mental-health concerns while objecting to what she described as an attempt to shift responsibility onto faculty members.

The controversy surrounding the death of an IIT Bombay student has intensified after the institute suspended the deanship of Professor Suryanarayana Doolla and apologised for statements it had previously made about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Amid protests on the campus, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned whether action against individual professors would address the broader issues being raised by students.

In a post on X, Chaturvedi described the student’s death as “extremely unfortunate” and said the incident should prompt premier educational institutions to examine their campus environment and the mental-health support available to students.

She also questioned whether targeting or removing professors could amount to a “band-aid solution” to deeper concerns.

Chaturvedi also objected to the focus on faculty members who, according to her account, were carrying out their responsibilities during an examination.

“Also, shifting the blame on the professors who were doing their job of reporting copying during an exam and making it about caste discrimination is a sad outcome,” she said.

Her comments came amid student protests and criticism surrounding IIT Bombay’s initial communication about the circumstances preceding the student’s death.

The MP’s remarks represent her position on how the situation is being handled. The circumstances surrounding the student’s death remain subject to investigation, and competing claims about what happened should not be treated as established facts until they are independently established.

IIT Bombay Suspends Professor Suryanarayana Doolla’s Deanship

IIT Bombay announced that it had suspended the deanship of Professor Suryanarayana Doolla with immediate effect.

The decision was taken by IIT Bombay Director Shireesh B. Kedare. The institute also issued an apology concerning its earlier communication about the incident.

In its revised statement, IIT Bombay acknowledged that it had made assertions about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death before those details had been established through an appropriate investigative process.

“We apologise for the statements contained in our earlier communication concerning the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate demise of Sahil,” the institute said.

The institute added that the details and circumstances leading up to the incident remained under investigation by the appropriate authorities.

It said it had been inappropriate to describe or characterise events preceding the student’s death before they had been established through the investigative process.

IIT Bombay Clarifies Director Shireesh B. Kedare’s Position

The institute also clarified reports concerning its director.

According to the supplied report, IIT Bombay stated that Shireesh B. Kedare had not resigned as director, despite claims circulating in connection with the controversy.

The clarification came alongside the institute’s decision concerning Professor Doolla and its apology over the earlier statement.

What Happened to IIT Bombay Student Sahil Wakode?

Sahil Wakode, a student in IIT Bombay’s Department of Energy Science and Engineering, died by suicide on Friday, according to the supplied reporting.

An earlier IIT Bombay statement issued on September 19 had alleged that Wakode had been caught cheating during an examination.

That account subsequently became a point of contention as protests grew and the institute later acknowledged that it had made premature assertions about the circumstances preceding the student’s death.

The institute’s revised communication said the matter remained subject to investigation by the appropriate authorities.
