A Canadian woman’s viral video defending India has sparked conversations online about the portrayal of the country in foreign travel content. In her two-minute clip, she criticises YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram creators for focusing on negative or sensational aspects of India, rather than highlighting its diversity, beauty, and modern infrastructure.
“I think it’s really important to talk about the terrible way that content creators have been portraying India, especially on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram,” she says, adding that such coverage contributes to growing racism against Indian people.
Misrepresentation of India in Travel Vlogs
The woman argues that many vloggers reduce India to a single chaotic street or unpleasant incident, ignoring the country’s vast landscapes and world-class experiences.
“Tourists will go to places like Old Delhi and kind of say this is what India looks like, when it’s one really small part of a city in a very large country,” she explains.
Sharing her own experiences, she highlights luxury stays and high-quality service that often go unreported in foreign travel vlogs.
“When I was in Delhi, I stayed at Shangri-La. It was only about 160 Canadian dollars a night, and it WAS AMAZING. The hotel is beautiful. The service is out of this world,” she says.
She further notes that India’s geographical diversity is unparalleled, from mountains and deserts to rainforests and beaches, a point often ignored in foreign content.

The speaker points out that similar negative narratives rarely target other Asian or European countries.
“If you search travel videos, you’ll never see people post things like ‘I tried Vietnam’s worst street food and I almost died.’ Mostly, India is targeted.”
Examples cited include:
- Gorehabba Festival, Karnataka – American YouTuber Tyler Oliveira filmed the annual festival in which villagers playfully throw cow dung. His viral clip titled “Inside India’s Poop‑Throwing Festival” drew sharp criticism from Indian viewers for mocking cultural traditions. Oliveira later abandoned plans for a full documentary after backlash.
- Air India Flight Vlog – Japanese travel creator Ikechan faced criticism for a caption on a recent Air India vlog stating: “The notoriously bad Air India… the plane is packed with Indians.” Many viewers called it culturally insensitive. Ikechan clarified that there was no harmful intent and made adjustments to the video thumbnail.
Growing Discussion on Cultural Sensitivity
The video has sparked widespread debate on responsible travel content creation, cultural sensitivity, and the importance of contextual representation. Social media users highlighted that portraying a country through isolated negative experiences not only misleads viewers but can also reinforce harmful stereotypes.
“Travel content should educate and inspire, not propagate a narrow, often racialized view of an entire nation,” one social media commentator wrote.
The Canadian creator’s video underlines a growing call for ethical storytelling in global travel media, particularly when depicting culturally rich and diverse countries like India.
