Mumbai CA Srishtii Sharda discusses increased employee workload after a colleague resigns

When an employee leaves a workplace, the vacancy does not always disappear with them. In many teams, the responsibilities remain—and, according to a viral video by Mumbai-based Chartered Accountant Srishtii Sharda, they often end up being divided among the employees who stay.

A familiar workplace frustration has become the subject of a viral online conversation after Chartered Accountant Srishtii Sharda spoke candidly about what can happen when an employee resigns and a company chooses not to immediately hire a replacement.

In a blunt video that has resonated with professionals online, Sharda questioned the increasingly familiar situation in which one person leaves a team, but their work simply gets redistributed among the remaining employees.

Her criticism was not directed at employees temporarily supporting their teams during a transition. Instead, she focused on situations where additional responsibilities gradually become part of an employee’s regular workload without corresponding recognition, support or compensation.

“Bro, tell me one thing: what kind of trend is this where, if someone resigns from an office, the company simply doesn’t hire a replacement?” she said.

When One Employee Leaves, the Work Often Stays

Sharda highlighted what she described as the next step in the process: rather than immediately filling the vacant role, companies may distribute that person’s tasks among existing team members.

According to her, the problem becomes particularly frustrating when employees are expected to permanently absorb additional responsibilities while their pay and professional recognition remain unchanged.

“That person’s workload is distributed among the existing employees,” she said, describing a situation many working professionals said they recognised.

Her argument was straightforward. If an employee’s workload increases substantially, should the additional contribution be reflected in their compensation, support or career growth?

‘More Work, Same Salary’

Sharda’s frustration centred on the gap between increased responsibility and what employees receive in return.

“And it’s not like they get any extra support in return. No salary hike, no appreciation, no promotion, nothing at all,” she said.

She then criticised the expectation that employees should simply accept the added workload while continuing on the same salary.

“You’re just expected to take on even more work for the exact same salary while being taken advantage of. Great, bro. Keep it up.”

The comments struck a chord with viewers, with the discussion quickly expanding into a broader conversation about workplace expectations and employee recognition.

One user summarised the issue in a short response: “More work, same salary.”

Another wrote: “Employees deserve better.”

Why the Video Has Resonated With Employees

The situation described by Sharda is familiar to many workers across industries.

A colleague resigns. The position remains vacant. The rest of the team steps in to ensure that deadlines are met and daily operations continue. In the short term, this may be an understandable response to an unexpected departure.

However, the conversation becomes more complicated when a temporary arrangement continues indefinitely.

Employees may find themselves performing parts of two roles, managing additional clients, projects or administrative responsibilities, and working under increased pressure—all without clarity about whether the situation is temporary or permanent.

That is where Sharda’s criticism appears to have connected with viewers.

The issue, for many employees, is not necessarily helping a team during a transition. The larger concern is whether additional responsibilities are properly acknowledged when they become a long-term expectation.

The Bigger Question: What Counts as Fair Workload Distribution?

Workload redistribution is a practical reality for many organisations, particularly during periods of hiring, restructuring or employee turnover.

But Sharda’s viral comments have placed attention on an important workplace question: when responsibilities increase, what should employees reasonably expect in return?

The answer can vary depending on the role, organisation and circumstances. Employees may look for one or more forms of recognition, including:

  • Additional staffing support
  • A revised job title or role
  • Higher compensation
  • A performance-based review
  • Additional resources
  • Clear career progression
  • A defined timeline for hiring a replacement

Without such conversations, an employee may feel that temporary support has quietly become a permanent expansion of their job.

The Importance of Clear Communication

The discussion also highlights the importance of communication between employers and employees.

During periods of transition, teams may be more willing to take on extra work when there is clarity about why it is necessary and how long it is expected to continue.

Uncertainty can create a different problem. If employees do not know whether a replacement will be hired—or whether their new responsibilities are now part of their permanent role—frustration can grow quickly.

Clear expectations, realistic timelines and recognition for additional contributions can make a significant difference to how workload changes are received.

A Viral Video About a Familiar Workplace Reality

The response to Srishtii Sharda’s video suggests that the topic has resonated because it reflects an experience many employees say they have encountered.

The viral conversation is ultimately about more than a single vacant position. It raises questions about how workplaces respond to departures, how additional responsibilities are distributed and whether employees are appropriately recognised when their roles expand.

For some, temporarily helping a team is part of professional life. But when “temporary” becomes indefinite, the conversation around fairness becomes much more significant.
