Manisha Koirala has often spoken candidly about her experience with cancer, including the fear and uncertainty that accompanied her diagnosis. In a recent conversation with Brut India, the actor reflected on a less-discussed part of her journey: the loneliness she experienced while battling the disease.

Koirala was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in 2012. She underwent extensive treatment, including major surgery and chemotherapy, and was declared cancer-free in 2013.

Looking back at the period when she first learned she had cancer, the Dil Se actor recalled an overwhelming sense of fear.

Manisha Koirala Recalls ‘Loneliest And Longest’ Night

Koirala said the emotional impact of her diagnosis became particularly intense once she was alone with her thoughts.

“In the daytime, I was told I had cancer. That night, for me, was the loneliest and longest night. And it just felt like a dark space. I felt, ‘I was going to die,’” she said during her conversation with Brut India.

The actor said her experience also made her understand how isolating cancer can feel for a patient, even when other people are present.

“I realised when I had cancer, I realised how lonely a patient feels,” Koirala said.

Her recollection highlights an aspect of serious illness that can be difficult for people outside the experience to understand. A patient may have doctors, family members and friends around them and still experience profound emotional loneliness.

‘In The Crowd, Also, One Feels Lonely’

Koirala also spoke about how her social life changed during that period.

She recalled attending Bollywood gatherings and interacting with people while simultaneously feeling disconnected from the environment around her.

“When I go to some Bollywood party, and I mingle around, but it’s not happening. Still, you want to be there because that’s part of the work,” she said.

Describing that phase as an extremely difficult period, Koirala added that loneliness does not necessarily disappear simply because a person is surrounded by others.

“At times, you are okay with it. Life is a mixture of so many different layers, but in the crowd, also, one feels lonely,” she said.

Her comments underline the difference between being socially surrounded and feeling emotionally supported.

The Emotional Impact Of A Cancer Diagnosis

A cancer diagnosis can bring significant emotional challenges alongside the physical effects of the disease.

Dr Amit Chakraborty, head and neck surgeon and surgical oncologist at Speciality Surgical Oncology (SSO) Hospital, Mumbai, told The Indian Express that every patient’s experience can be different.

“Every person’s cancer journey is different. While some respond well to treatment, others may require longer or more intensive care. Along with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy, patients often face anxiety about their future, changes in their appearance, financial concerns, and the impact of treatment on their daily lives,” he said.

These concerns can arise at different stages, from diagnosis and treatment through recovery and follow-up care.

For patients, uncertainty about the future can be particularly difficult to manage. Changes to daily routines, work, relationships and physical appearance can also affect emotional wellbeing.

Why Mental Health Support Can Matter During Cancer Treatment

Cancer care is not limited to treating the disease itself. Emotional and psychological support can also form an important part of comprehensive patient care.

Dr Sajjan Rajpurohit, director of medical oncology at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi, explained that cancer can affect both physical and emotional wellbeing.

“Patients experience a significant difference in their emotional health starting from the diagnosis until the completion of the treatment,” he said.

According to Dr Rajpurohit, addressing mental health can help patients develop greater resilience while navigating diagnosis and treatment.

Access to appropriate counselling, psychoeducation and psychological support can help patients understand their diagnosis, prepare for treatment and find ways to manage fear and distress.

He also emphasised the importance of patients feeling supported and informed throughout their treatment journey.

“Getting the right kind of psycho education about the disease right from the start along with therapy sessions can improve survival rates, reduce fear of recurrence and provide a better quality of life to the patients,” he said.

However, psychological support should be viewed as part of comprehensive cancer care rather than a substitute for medical treatment. Cancer treatment decisions should always be made with qualified healthcare professionals based on an individual’s diagnosis and medical needs.

Manisha Koirala’s Cancer Journey

Koirala’s diagnosis came in 2012, when she was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer.

The actor underwent an extensive treatment journey, including an 11-hour surgery and multiple chemotherapy sessions. She later recovered and has continued to speak publicly about her experience in an effort to raise awareness about cancer and the emotional realities surrounding the disease.

Her experience has also influenced the way she approaches conversations about health, resilience and life after cancer.

By sharing memories of the fear and loneliness she experienced, Koirala has highlighted that surviving cancer is not simply a physical journey. Recovery can also involve processing difficult emotions and adapting to life after treatment.

Manisha Koirala On Finding Strength After Cancer

Today, Koirala continues to work in the film industry while openly discussing the lessons she took from her cancer experience.

Her latest comments offer a reminder that emotional wellbeing deserves attention alongside physical treatment. For people facing cancer, having access to medical care, reliable information and a supportive network can be important throughout the treatment journey.

At the same time, Koirala’s account shows that loneliness can affect even those who appear to have a strong support system around them.

Her message is ultimately about acknowledging those feelings rather than dismissing them.

If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally after a cancer diagnosis, consider speaking with the treating oncology team or a qualified mental-health professional. Support from trained professionals can be an important part of comprehensive cancer care.
