In a recent vlog, Farah Khan recalled the tense moment that nearly derailed her directorial debut. Everything seemed perfectly aligned: Shah Rukh Khan, Zayed Khan and Sushmita Sen were locked, locations in Darjeeling were finalised, costumes were ready, and rehearsals were already underway. Newcomer Ayesha Takia had been signed to play Sanjana.

Barely two weeks before the shoot, Ayesha opted out of the film. She had committed to Socha Na Tha, which was initially described as a short project but eventually extended for several months. With schedules fixed and preparations complete, Farah was left scrambling for a replacement.

As a first-time director, the sudden exit caused panic — the film was ready to roll, but its leading lady was gone.

How Amrita Rao Entered the Film Overnight

The casting crisis found an unexpected solution through Gauri Khan. She suggested an actress she had noticed in a coffee commercial — Amrita Rao. Farah was initially unsure, as Amrita’s soft, girl-next-door image did not match the character she had envisioned for Sanjana.

Despite her hesitation, Farah agreed to meet Amrita and asked her to perform an emotional confrontation scene opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Watching the audition through the camera lens changed everything. The doubts disappeared instantly.

A Last-Minute Gamble That Became Iconic

Although already working on multiple projects, Amrita adjusted her schedule and joined Main Hoon Na at the eleventh hour. The film went on floors as planned, and the rest became Bollywood history.

Main Hoon Na turned into a major box-office success, while Amrita Rao’s portrayal of Sanjana emerged as one of the film’s most loved performances.
