Taapsee Pannu Says She Questions ‘Top Directors’ Over Repetitive Casting

Actor Taapsee Pannu, who recently earned appreciation for her performance in Assi, has opened up about confronting leading filmmakers over repetitive casting patterns in the industry.

The social drama is directed by Anubhav Sinha, marking another collaboration between the two after their previous projects, Mulk and Thappad.

In a recent interaction with Galatta Plus, Taapsee spoke candidly about how she challenges established directors on their casting decisions.

‘Nobody Wants to Think Out of the Box’

During the conversation, Taapsee reflected on the industry’s tendency to remain within familiar creative boundaries.

She explained that filmmakers often imagine certain actors for specific roles without exploring unconventional options. According to her, breaking that perception is the first hurdle.

Taapsee noted that she frequently clarifies to directors that she is open to films where she may not necessarily be the central character. She also expressed interest in lighter roles, adding that her presence in a film does not always need to revolve around a heavy social issue.

‘It Is Unfair to People Like Me’

The actor further stated that she directly questions why the same faces are repeatedly cast in similar roles.

In her view, such repetition limits experimentation — both for actors eager to explore new dimensions and for directors who might be operating within a creative comfort zone.

She suggested that when new actors are given familiar character types, they bring fresh interpretations, whereas repeated casting often results in predictable performances.

Taapsee’s Career Trajectory

Taapsee began her film journey in Tamil and Telugu cinema before transitioning to Bollywood with Chashme Baddoor. She gained wider recognition with Baby and received critical acclaim for Pink.

In recent years, she appeared in Dunki, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba and Khel Khel Mein, continuing to diversify her filmography.
