Before Patrick Swayze became Sam Wheat, the lead role in Ghost had already passed through the hands of several major Hollywood names. Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis, Paul Hogan and Michael J. Fox were among the actors linked to the part, with some later admitting they had misjudged the unusual supernatural romance.

It is difficult to imagine anyone other than Patrick Swayze playing Sam Wheat in Ghost today. But before the 1990 supernatural romance became one of the defining films of its era, Hollywood had a very different idea of who might play the character.

The script, written by Bruce Joel Rubin and directed by Jerry Zucker, combined romance, crime, comedy and the supernatural. On paper, that combination proved difficult for some actors to understand.

Several established stars reportedly passed on the opportunity to play Sam, leaving the role open for Swayze—an actor who initially was not even Zucker’s first choice for the part.

The eventual result was a remarkable box-office success.

Harrison Ford Could Not See How ‘Ghost’ Would Work

Harrison Ford was among the biggest stars considered for Ghost.

According to accounts of the film’s casting history, Ford read the screenplay multiple times but struggled to connect with its premise. He reportedly went through the script three times before ultimately deciding against playing Sam.

The hesitation is understandable when looking at the film’s unusual setup.

Sam is murdered early in the story and becomes a ghost who remains on Earth because he needs to protect his girlfriend, Molly. The story then moves between supernatural drama, romance, suspense and comedy.

What may have appeared difficult to translate from page to screen eventually became precisely what made the film distinctive.

Bruce Willis Later Regretted Saying No

Another major actor associated with the role was Bruce Willis.

Willis reportedly passed on Ghost, and the decision later became one of those Hollywood “what if?” moments. The actor subsequently described himself as a “knucklehead” for turning down the part.

At the time, however, the concept of playing a romantic lead who spends much of the movie as a ghost was not necessarily an obvious career move.

Willis would go on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, particularly following the success of Die Hard. But Ghost demonstrated that Swayze could carry a major romantic drama with supernatural elements—and turn an unconventional premise into a mainstream hit.

Paul Hogan Thought The Film Was A Comedy

Australian actor Paul Hogan, best known internationally for Crocodile Dundee, was another name connected to the role.

Hogan reportedly rejected the project because he believed the screenplay was intended to be a comedy and did not find it funny.

That misunderstanding highlights just how difficult Ghost was to categorise before audiences actually saw it.

The finished film did contain comedy, particularly through Whoopi Goldberg’s performance as Oda Mae Brown, but its emotional core was the relationship between Sam and Molly and the tragedy surrounding Sam’s death.

Michael J. Fox Also Passed On The Film

Michael J. Fox was another actor considered for Sam Wheat.

Fox reportedly had reservations about whether the film’s unusual premise could successfully make the transition to the screen. He ultimately passed on the project and later expressed regret about the decision.

At the time, Fox was already a major star following Back to the Future and its sequels, so the opportunity represented another potentially significant addition to his filmography.

Instead, it became one of Hollywood’s more intriguing missed opportunities.

Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise And Other Names Were Considered

The casting story surrounding Ghost extends beyond the actors who are most frequently mentioned as having passed on the role.

Tom Hanks, Kevin Kline, Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise have also been associated with the long list of names considered for Sam during the development and casting process.

However, not every name connected to the casting process necessarily rejected the role.

That distinction matters when revisiting Hollywood casting stories years later. “Considered,” “offered” and “turned down” are not interchangeable terms, and many retrospective lists combine them.

Patrick Swayze Had To Fight For Sam Wheat

The actor who ultimately transformed Sam Wheat into an iconic character did not initially receive the role he wanted.

Patrick Swayze was reportedly offered the supporting part of Steve Garner, but he was interested in playing Sam instead.

Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin reportedly saw something in Swayze that made him suitable for the role and advocated for his casting.

Zucker initially resisted the idea, but eventually changed his mind.

That decision proved crucial.

Swayze brought a combination of physical presence and emotional vulnerability to Sam. His chemistry with Demi Moore, who played Molly Jensen, became one of the film’s defining strengths.

Demi Moore And Whoopi Goldberg Completed The Cast

While Swayze’s casting became central to Ghost‘s success, the film’s ensemble was equally important.

Demi Moore played Molly, the woman Sam leaves behind after his murder.

Tony Goldwyn portrayed Carl Bruner, Sam’s friend whose betrayal becomes an important part of the story.

And Whoopi Goldberg played Oda Mae Brown, a fraudulent medium who unexpectedly discovers that she can communicate with Sam.

Goldberg’s performance provided much of the movie’s comic energy while also giving the supernatural story a grounded human perspective.

She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role.

‘Ghost’ Became The Biggest Film Of 1990

The casting uncertainty ultimately gave way to one of the year’s biggest cinematic successes.

Released on July 13, 1990, Ghost became the highest-grossing film of the year in the United States and a major international hit.

The movie earned more than $500 million worldwide, an extraordinary result for a romantic supernatural drama.

It also received multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, while Rubin won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The film’s signature moments—including its pottery scene and the emotional farewell between Sam and Molly—became part of popular culture.

The Kevin Bacon ‘Ghost’ Rumour Has A Different Ending

Hollywood casting stories often become distorted as they are repeated, and Ghost has its own example.

Kevin Bacon has been mentioned in some retrospective discussions about actors who supposedly turned down the role of Sam.

But Bacon has pushed back on that claim.

In an interview with Business Insider, he said he did not remember being offered the role and added, “No, I wish. I don’t think I would’ve turned it down.”

His comments are a useful reminder that not every name attached to a famous “actors who rejected the role” list actually belongs on it.

The Role That Nobody Could Quite See Until Swayze Did It

The history of Ghost is fascinating because the film’s eventual success was difficult to predict from its premise alone.

A murdered man returning as a ghost, a romance that continues after death, a psychic medium and a revenge storyline could easily have become an awkward mixture of genres.

Instead, Swayze, Moore and Goldberg found the emotional and comic balance that made the film work.

The actors who passed on Sam Wheat were not necessarily making irrational choices. The project was unconventional, and its eventual success depended heavily on the performances and creative decisions that followed.

But in retrospect, the casting chain feels almost perfectly designed to create one of the most memorable romantic performances of Swayze’s career.
