Sreeleela’s remarks about working through period pain have triggered a wider conversation about menstrual health, individual experiences and the pressure to remain productive despite physical symptoms. The actor-doctor spoke about her own experience of working during menstruation while discussing equality and professional commitments at the success meet of Ustaad Bhagat Singh.

Her comments have since prompted contrasting reactions online, with some people relating to her experience while others arguing that menstrual symptoms vary considerably from one person to another.

What Sreeleela Said About Working During Her Period

Speaking at the film’s success meet in March following its release, Sreeleela reflected on performing demanding songs while menstruating.

She said:

“All of my songs, I can say, most of them at least have been appreciated. I have shot while I have been on my period, so that is not an excuse anywhere. When we want things in power, when we say we want things equally. I feel we have to push beyond physiological barriers. So psychological, physiological, all of this is not an excuse.”

Her comments were framed around her belief that women seeking equality in demanding professional environments may sometimes need to work through physical challenges.

However, the remarks also raised questions about whether one person’s experience of menstruation can be applied broadly to everyone who menstruates.

Why Period Symptoms Can Be Very Different

Menstruation does not affect everyone in the same way.

Some people experience relatively mild symptoms and can continue their normal routines with little disruption. Others can experience significant pain, fatigue or other symptoms that make everyday activities difficult.

Common menstrual symptoms can include:

  • Abdominal or pelvic cramps
  • Lower-back pain
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Bloating
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Mood changes

The severity and combination of symptoms can vary between individuals and can also change from one menstrual cycle to another.

That means being able to complete a physically demanding shoot during a period does not necessarily indicate that another person should be able to do the same.

Period Pain Is Not Simply a Question of Willpower

Menstrual cramps, medically known as dysmenorrhoea, can range from mild discomfort to severe pain.

For some people, menstrual pain can interfere with work, education, exercise and other daily activities.

Severe or persistent menstrual pain can sometimes be associated with underlying conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis or uterine fibroids, although painful periods do not automatically mean that one of these conditions is present.

This is why menstrual symptoms should not be reduced to a question of motivation, toughness or willingness to work.

Why Individual Experiences Matter

The debate surrounding Sreeleela’s comments highlights an important distinction between sharing a personal experience and making a general statement about menstrual health.

An individual may be able to work, exercise or perform during menstruation without significant difficulty. Another person may experience symptoms that require rest, medication or medical attention.

Both experiences can be real.

Menstrual health is influenced by several factors, including hormone fluctuations, individual pain sensitivity, age, stress, sleep, overall health and underlying medical conditions.

When Menstrual Pain May Need Medical Attention

Occasional mild-to-moderate menstrual discomfort can be common. However, severe or worsening symptoms should not simply be dismissed as something a person has to endure.

Medical evaluation can be appropriate when period pain:

  • Regularly prevents normal daily activities
  • Is severe or progressively worsening
  • Does not improve with commonly used pain-relief measures
  • Is accompanied by unusually heavy bleeding
  • Is associated with fainting, severe weakness or other concerning symptoms
  • Begins unexpectedly after previously uncomplicated periods

A gynaecologist can assess symptoms and determine whether further investigation is necessary.

Equality Does Not Require Identical Physical Experiences

The discussion also raises a broader question about what equality at work should mean.

Women should have equal opportunities to participate in demanding professional environments. At the same time, equality does not require every person to have identical physical experiences.

Workplaces can support equality by recognising legitimate health needs rather than assuming that everyone will respond to menstruation in the same way.

For performers, athletes and people working in physically demanding professions, access to appropriate breaks, healthcare and reasonable working conditions can be particularly important.

The Larger Conversation Around Menstrual Health

Sreeleela’s comments have brought attention to a subject that is still frequently discussed through stereotypes and misconceptions.

Menstruation is a normal biological process, but the symptoms associated with it are not identical for everyone.

The most useful takeaway from the debate may therefore be that one person’s ability to push through menstrual symptoms should not become a benchmark for everyone else.

Personal resilience and professional commitment can coexist with recognition of genuine health concerns.
