Dancer and choreographer Shakti Mohan has spoken candidly about the demanding schedules in the Indian dance industry, stating that fixed working hours rarely exist for performers. In a recent interaction with India Today, she reflected on her early career and revealed that 18-hour workdays were once routine.
“There Was No Concept of Working Hours”
Discussing the ongoing conversation around regulated working hours in the entertainment industry, Shakti explained that dancers often function outside traditional schedules.
Recalling her time on Dil Dosti Dance (2011), she shared that 12-hour shifts were standard, with some days stretching to 15 hours. After shooting, she would head straight into rehearsals for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 7.
She further added that during Dance India Dance Season 2, 18-hour workdays were not uncommon. According to her, awareness around work-life balance was limited at the time, and most dancers accepted the grind as part of their passion-driven careers.

Dealing With Sudden Fame
Shakti also opened up about the unexpected nature of fame. Coming from a background where dancers were not traditionally seen as mainstream celebrities, she said she never anticipated being widely recognized.
She recalled using public transport before fame and being surprised when people began identifying her in public spaces. Over time, she adapted to the attention, describing the transition as both overwhelming and transformative.
Why She Stepped Back From Acting
After gaining popularity through Dil Dosti Dance, Shakti gradually shifted her focus toward building her dance education platform. Over the past decade, she has invested her time in establishing Nritya Shakti, a dance production and training brand aimed at nurturing young talent.
Although she stepped away from acting, she revealed that she is considering a return. She confirmed that new creative projects are currently in development, hinting at a possible comeback.

Addressing concerns about dance losing depth in the era of short-form viral content, Shakti maintained a balanced perspective. She believes audience preferences ultimately shape trends.
According to her, if a certain style resonates with the public, it deserves respect. Trends, she noted, are cyclical and constantly evolving.
Family, Comparisons, and the Mohan Sisters
Shakti also reflected on growing up with her sisters — singer Neeti Mohan, choreographer Mukti Mohan, and Kriti Mohan. She described Neeti as a guiding figure, given their age difference, while admitting that comparisons were more frequent between her and Mukti due to their similar appearances and shared interests.

Giving Back to the Dance Community
Explaining the vision behind Nritya Shakti, Shakti said her primary aim was to give back to the community that shaped her journey — from Dance India Dance to Dance Plus. She hopes to provide structured training and professional preparation for aspiring dancers entering the competitive entertainment space.
The Evolving Landscape of Indian Dance
Looking at the broader industry, Shakti acknowledged significant improvements over the past 15 years. Reality shows and social media platforms have created more visibility and professional opportunities for dancers. However, she believes the ecosystem still has room to grow in terms of recognition and stability.
As she moves into 2026, Shakti is set to begin Season 3 of Dance Across The World. She also confirmed that an upcoming project may mark her return to acting, signaling yet another phase in her multifaceted career.
