World’s Strongest Beer? Samuel Adams’ 30% ABV Utopias 2025 Banned in 15 U.S. States

A new beer release is turning heads across the beverage world — not for its flavor alone, but for its staggering strength.

Earlier this fall, Samuel Adams unveiled Utopias 2025, an experimental “extreme beer” with a jaw-dropping 30% alcohol by volume (ABV) — placing it in the same category as many liqueurs and spirits, and making it illegal in 15 U.S. states.

So Strong, It’s Banned

Because of its unusually high alcohol content, Utopias 2025 cannot be sold in:

Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia.

At 30% ABV, Utopias rivals popular spirits such as triple sec, schnapps and amaretto — a remarkable feat for a beverage still classified as beer.

What Makes Utopias Different

Utopias is part of Samuel Adams’ long-running experimental brewing program, created to explore the outer limits of aging and blending techniques.

The 2025 release is:

• Ruby-black in color
• Non-carbonated
• Designed to behave more like a fine spirit than a traditional beer
• Bottled in 24.5-ounce ceramic vessels
• Meant to be resealed and enjoyed over time
• Not intended for refrigeration

Its tasting profile includes caramel, oak, dried fruit, subtle smoke and citrus, offering complexity closer to high-end spirits than conventional beer.

A $240 Collectible Experience

Utopias 2025 carries a suggested retail price of $240 per bottle, though prices have climbed since its October release due to high demand and limited availability.

Each bottle yields approximately 12 to 24 servings, with recommended pours of just 1 to 2 ounces — reinforcing that this is a sipping experience, not a casual beverage.

Samuel Adams founder Jim Koch described the release as:

He emphasized that every bottle reflects decades of experimentation and collaboration, resulting in what he called an experience that is “collectible, memorable and worth the wait.”

Health & Safety Perspective

Hospitality expert and author Cesar Wurm cautions that Utopias should not be approached like ordinary beer.

A typical 12-ounce beer at 5% ABV equals the alcohol of a 1.5-ounce shot of 40% spirits. At 30% ABV, the same amount contains six times that alcohol — dramatically increasing the risk of rapid intoxication and alcohol poisoning if consumed improperly.

“From a consumer standpoint, this is not a product for casual drinking,” Wurm said.
“The danger is that people treat it like beer when it behaves like liquor.”
