Priyanka Chopra Opens Up: ‘I Was Pushed to Seek Work Outside Bollywood’

Global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas has reflected on a turning point in her career, revealing that her move to international projects was not entirely by choice.

Having established herself as one of Bollywood’s leading actors in the 2000s, Priyanka’s transition to Hollywood marked a significant shift. However, she now shares that leaving Hindi cinema was never part of her original plan.

‘I Never Wanted to Leave Bollywood’

In a recent interview, Priyanka explained that during her time in Bollywood, she often felt creatively limited despite delivering strong performances and headlining major films. She acknowledged that industry dynamics — including camps and lobbying — played a role in shaping her experiences.

According to the actor, she felt compelled to look beyond Hindi cinema in search of opportunities that aligned with her artistic aspirations. While the move eventually opened doors in the West, she admitted that it stemmed from a desire to expand rather than abandon Indian cinema.

She described the early phase of her international career as a restart — a process that required patience and resilience. Nearly 12 years later, she says she has reached a stage where she can choose projects that genuinely excite her.

Now returning to work in India with her upcoming film Varanasi, Priyanka views this phase as a full-circle moment. She has emphasised that her affection for Bollywood never faded, even while building a career abroad.

The actor says she values the distinct experiences both industries have offered. Rather than choosing one over the other, she now aims to balance her presence across markets.
