Nayanthara Reveals Her First Paycheque Was Just Rs 2,000–3,000 Before She Became a South Cinema Star

Nayanthara is today one of the most recognisable names in Indian cinema, with a career spanning Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. But before the blockbuster movies, major brands and pan-India recognition, her first professional assignment came with a surprisingly modest payment.

During a conversation with Pearle Maaney, Nayanthara opened up about her early days and revealed that she earned around Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 for one of her first assignments.

The revelation offers a glimpse into the actress’s journey from modelling to becoming one of the most successful leading women in South Indian cinema.

Nayanthara Recalls Her First Job

When Pearle Maaney asked Nayanthara about her first job and how much she earned from it, the actress said she believed it was connected to a cover shoot for Vanitha magazine.

“I think it was for Vanitha’s cover shoot. I think I was called for a fashion program,” Nayanthara recalled.

She then revealed that the payment for the assignment was approximately Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000.

The amount may seem small compared with the scale of her career today, but it marked one of the earliest steps in a journey that would eventually take her from modelling to leading roles in some of the biggest South Indian films.

Pearle Maaney also shared a humorous childhood memory during the conversation, recalling that she had once received Rs 500 for cutting her father’s nails.

The exchange gave the discussion a light-hearted look at the modest beginnings of two successful personalities.

How Nayanthara Entered the Film Industry

Interestingly, acting was not initially part of Nayanthara’s career plan.

She was working as a model when filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad noticed her photograph in Vanitha magazine.

That encounter eventually changed the direction of her life.

Anthikad approached her for Manassinakkare, a Malayalam film released in 2003. The movie marked Nayanthara’s acting debut and gave her an opportunity to establish herself on screen.

Rather than entering the industry through a traditional film-school route, her transition happened after she was noticed through her modelling work.

She subsequently appeared in Malayalam films including Vismayathumbathu and Natturajavu, gradually building experience in front of the camera.

From Malayalam Cinema to Tamil Films

Nayanthara’s career expanded significantly when she entered Tamil cinema.

She made her Tamil debut with Ayya in 2005, establishing a presence in one of India’s largest regional film industries.

Her career received another major boost with Chandramukhi, in which she shared the screen with superstar Rajinikanth.

The success and visibility of the film helped introduce her to a much wider audience.

Over the years, Nayanthara increasingly moved into prominent roles and demonstrated that she could carry films across different genres.

Her filmography eventually included commercially successful and critically appreciated projects such as Billa, Maya, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan and Kolamaavu Kokila.

Nayanthara Became Known as a Leading Woman Who Could Carry Films

The action thriller became a major box-office success and introduced Nayanthara to an even larger national audience.

Her performance alongside Shah Rukh Khan also marked an important point in her career because she was already an established star in South Indian cinema before making her Hindi debut.

Rather than beginning again as a newcomer, she entered Bollywood with an established body of work behind her.

Nayanthara’s Upcoming Films

Nayanthara continues to remain active across South Indian cinema.

She is set to appear in the upcoming Tamil romantic drama Hi, which stars Kavin and is directed by debutant Vishnu Edavan.

The film is scheduled to release in theatres on August 28, 2026.

She is also part of Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, alongside Kannada star Yash. The film is directed by Geetu Mohandas and is scheduled for theatrical release on August 26, 2026.

Both projects add to a filmography that has continued to expand across languages and genres.

From a Rs 2,000 Assignment to a Pan-India Career

Nayanthara’s first-paycheque story is interesting not simply because of the amount involved, but because of how dramatically her career has evolved since those early modelling assignments.
