Masaba Gupta has praised Bipasha Basu’s athletic physique, reigniting a wider conversation about women, muscularity and the outdated idea that strength is incompatible with femininity.

Masaba Gupta has come out strongly in favour of Bipasha Basu’s muscular and athletic physique, praising the actor’s distinctive appearance and the confidence she has brought to Indian popular culture.

The fashion designer and entrepreneur shared her thoughts on Instagram after Bipasha featured on a magazine cover. While celebrating the actor as one of the original faces of Bollywood’s fitness-conscious era, Gupta also used the moment to question the narrow beauty standards that often dominate conversations about women’s bodies.

Gupta praised Basu’s athletic build and expressed admiration for her visible muscle, arguing that physical strength should not be viewed as something that makes a woman less feminine.

Her comments have also drawn attention because they arrived amid renewed discussion surrounding remarks previously made by actor Mrunal Thakur about Basu’s muscular appearance.

Sharing the magazine cover on her Instagram Stories, Gupta described Basu as one of Bollywood’s original personalities and argued that her individuality made her stand apart from increasingly uniform beauty ideals.

Gupta specifically celebrated Basu’s athletic frame and muscularity, making the broader point that strength and femininity can coexist.

Her message is significant because female celebrities have historically faced conflicting expectations around their bodies. Women are often encouraged to appear slim and delicate, while a visibly muscular physique can attract criticism for supposedly looking too masculine.

Gupta’s response challenges that assumption directly.

Rather than treating muscle as incompatible with conventional femininity, her comments frame strength as an attribute worth celebrating.

Why Bipasha Basu has long stood out for her fitness-focused image

Bipasha Basu has maintained a strong association with fitness throughout her career.

Unlike beauty standards that have frequently favoured an extremely slender silhouette for female celebrities, Basu has often embraced a visibly conditioned and athletic physique. Her fitness image became particularly prominent during the 2000s, when she was among the Bollywood personalities associated with workout culture and physical conditioning.

That history helps explain why Gupta referred to her as an original rather than simply another celebrity following a current fitness trend.

Basu’s public image has demonstrated that there is more than one way for women in the entertainment industry to present themselves—and that athleticism can itself become part of a woman’s identity and style.

The Mrunal Thakur controversy returns to the conversation

Gupta’s comments also come against the backdrop of an earlier controversy involving Mrunal Thakur.

A video featuring Thakur and her Kumkum Bhagya co-star Arjit Taneja circulated online after the pair discussed fitness and exercise. During the exchange, Thakur made remarks comparing herself with Basu and questioned whether someone would want to marry a woman with a muscular physique.

The comments attracted criticism, with viewers accusing the actor of body-shaming Basu.

Thakur subsequently apologised for the remarks and clarified her position.

The episode nevertheless revived a much larger question: why is muscularity frequently interpreted differently when it appears on a woman’s body?

Is being muscular incompatible with femininity?

Health and fitness professionals have increasingly pushed back against the idea that women should avoid developing muscle to preserve a traditionally feminine appearance.

Consultant dietitian and fitness professional Garima Goyal has argued that strength and femininity should not be treated as mutually exclusive concepts.

A woman can be athletic, muscular and physically strong while also identifying with or expressing femininity in whatever way feels authentic to her.

The physiological benefits of maintaining muscle are also important. Resistance exercise can support muscular strength, functional capacity and bone health, while adequate nutrition is essential for maintaining and developing lean tissue.

For women, these considerations become particularly relevant as muscle mass and bone density can change with age.

Is being muscular incompatible with femininity?

Why women should not be afraid of strength training

One persistent misconception is that women who begin lifting weights will quickly become excessively muscular.

In reality, substantial muscle development generally requires consistent resistance training, appropriate nutrition, recovery and a sustained training stimulus. Individual results also vary according to genetics, training history, hormones, nutrition and other factors.

For most women, incorporating resistance exercise into a balanced fitness routine is more likely to improve strength and physical function than suddenly produce a highly muscular physique.

Nutrition matters, too.

Adequate protein supports muscle repair and maintenance, while carbohydrates provide an important source of energy for physical activity. Healthy fats and a varied intake of vitamins and minerals also contribute to overall health.

That does not mean every woman needs the same diet or training programme. Fitness goals, medical conditions, age, activity level and nutritional requirements differ from person to person.

From “thin” to strong: is the beauty conversation changing?

The debate surrounding Basu’s physique reflects a broader cultural shift in how female fitness is discussed.

For years, celebrity fitness conversations frequently centred on weight loss, thinness and measurements. More recently, strength, mobility, athletic performance and functional fitness have become increasingly visible parts of the conversation.

That change can be empowering—but it is important not to replace one rigid beauty standard with another.

Women should not have to be thin to be considered feminine, nor should they have to be muscular to be considered healthy or strong.

The more useful message is that female bodies do not need to conform to a single visual template.

Masaba Gupta’s message goes beyond one celebrity

Gupta’s praise for Basu is ultimately about more than a magazine cover.

Her comments challenge the assumption that women must minimise visible strength to conform to conventional ideas of femininity. Basu’s athletic physique provides a prominent example of a woman who has maintained a distinct physical identity in an industry where appearance is constantly scrutinised.

Whether a woman chooses yoga, running, weight training, dance, swimming, sport—or no formal exercise at all—her femininity should not be measured by the amount of muscle she has.

And that may be the most important point emerging from the debate: strength does not have a gender.

A note on fitness and nutrition

There is no single ideal female body type, and exercise or dietary choices should be based on an individual’s health, goals and circumstances. Anyone beginning a new training or nutrition programme—particularly people with an existing medical condition, injury, pregnancy-related considerations or specific nutritional needs—should seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
