“I was just five months old when my father passed away. Back then, my mother worked at an NGO. My brother was nine. My mother had always wanted to become an actress but couldn’t, so she pushed me towards acting.”

Unlike many performers who dream of becoming actors, Mahima says acting initially held little appeal for her.

She began attending auditions at the age of nine, balancing school with long bus journeys across Mumbai. Although she often felt exhausted and uncertain about the profession, she continued because her family’s financial situation left few alternatives.

She explained that supporting her family became her primary motivation.

“I started auditioning when I was nine. I would tell my mother that I wasn’t interested in acting. I didn’t understand this world. I would attend school for half the day, travel by bus to auditions and come back exhausted. But my mother kept pushing me. The biggest reason I became a part of this industry was because I wanted to support my family.”

Growing Up Faster Than Most Children

Mahima has often reflected on how early responsibilities shaped her childhood.

Living in a Mumbai chawl, she experienced financial insecurity and, according to her, sometimes faced judgment from people around her, including relatives.

A major turning point arrived with the television show Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, which premiered in 2012.

The show’s success significantly improved her family’s financial circumstances.

Mahima later revealed that she purchased her first home in Mira Road at the age of 14 and also bought her first car soon afterward.

While the achievement was remarkable, she acknowledged the sacrifices that came with it.

She said she missed many aspects of a typical school life, often attending classes only during examinations because work commitments took priority.

One experience on the set of Balika Vadhu left a lasting impact.

While performing a scene opposite veteran actors Surekha Sikri and Anup Soni, she forgot her lines. According to Mahima, the director questioned why she was acting if she did not know her craft.

Rather than discouraging her, the incident motivated her to prepare more thoroughly and improve her skills.
