“I’ve always been a huge nerd and I’ve always played video games,” Jennings said.

One of the more interesting aspects of Jennings’ career transition was her attempt to apply lessons from finance to digital media.

She explained that her work at Lazard involved analytics and building databases, while running a YouTube channel required understanding an audience and analysing what content performed well.

“I feel like I have a mini-business that I don’t need venture capital funding for,” she said.

Jennings described the experience as being similar to operating a small company by herself, with content creation forming only one part of the job.

That perspective also connected her new career to her longer-term interest in entrepreneurship.

She said that she did not see herself returning to Wall Street as an analyst but remained interested in venture capital and start-ups.

Although she had sizeable followings on social-media platforms at the time of the interview, her YouTube audience was considerably smaller.
