From a Mumbai Chawl to Musafir Cafe: Mahima Makwana’s Journey of Building a Life From Scratch

Mahima Makwana’s journey from growing up in a Mumbai chawl to becoming a familiar face across television, Bollywood and streaming has been shaped by perseverance, early success and the support of her mother. Now, with her performance in Netflix’s Musafir Cafe drawing attention, the actress has reflected on the experiences that shaped her career.

Mahima Makwana’s latest screen outing has brought renewed attention to an acting journey that began when she was just nine years old.

The actress, who has won appreciation for playing Preeti in Netflix’s Musafir Cafe, entered the entertainment industry as a child artist. Her first major television appearance came with Baalika Vadhu, but it was Sapne Suhaane Ladakpan Ke that Mahima credits with giving her a real taste of recognition and making her realise that acting was something she wanted to pursue for the long term.

Behind that career, however, was a childhood marked by challenges. Mahima grew up in a Mumbai chawl and was raised by her mother after losing her father when she was only five months old.

Mahima Makwana recalls growing up with a single parent

In an interview with Screen, Mahima spoke about the circumstances of her childhood and the journey she and her mother undertook together.

Looking back, the actress said she remembers both the difficult and positive moments and remains grateful for the life they were able to build.

“I recall the good and the bad, and I am only grateful. I am extremely proud of myself because I and my mother have earned the position that we have in life,” Mahima said.

She acknowledged that growing up with a single parent was difficult, particularly while trying to establish herself at a young age.

“All of us have had our share of ups and downs. It was hard to have a single parent, to hold my own, and to make a life from scratch, but it’s not impossible. You just have to be at it. I have earned it; I am very humbled when I say it,” she added.

Her comments offer an insight into the personal circumstances behind a career that began in childhood and gradually expanded across television and film.

Baalika Vadhu was the beginning, but Sapne Suhaane Ladakpan Ke changed everything

Mahima made her debut as a child artist in Baalika Vadhu. Although the show became an important early chapter in her career, she says she does not remember much about working on it.

“I don’t have any memories of working in Baalika Vadhu,” she told Screen.

According to Mahima, the project that truly changed her career was Sapne Suhaane Ladakpan Ke. She was 13 when she appeared in the show, and the experience introduced her to a much wider audience.

“The pivotal show that gave me fame and success and made me a household name was Sapne Suhaane Ladakpan Ke. I was 13 at that point,” she said.

The success of the series also gave the young actress clarity about her ambitions.

“That serial gave me my first sense of fame, a realisation that I want to do this for as long as I can,” Mahima recalled.

From television roles to Bollywood

Following Sapne Suhaane Ladakpan Ke, Mahima continued to work across television, appearing in shows including Code Red, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya and Rishton Ka Chakravyuh.

Her career later expanded into Hindi cinema.

Mahima made her Bollywood debut in Salman Khan’s 2021 film Antim: The Final Truth. Although her role was relatively brief, the actress described the opportunity as a significant turning point.

“Antim opened so many doors for me. I never imagined that I would start with a Salman Khan film. It was a 10-minute part. And then, it was a completely different journey altogether,” she said.

The film marked Mahima’s transition from a television performer to an actor working across different formats.

Mahima is now being seen in Musafir Cafe, a Netflix series featuring an ensemble cast that includes Vikrant Massey, Vedika Pinto, Adil Hussain and Sadiya Siddiqui.

The actress plays Preeti, a character whose warmth and relatability have helped bring renewed attention to Mahima’s work.

The series is directed by Divya Prakash Dubey and Ruchir Arun and is streaming on Netflix.

For Mahima, the project represents another stage in a career that has evolved considerably since her childhood television debut.
