Madhubanti Bagchi Reacts to Arijit Singh Stepping Away from Playback Singing

Singer Madhubanti Bagchi has shared her thoughts on Arijit Singh stepping away from accepting new playback singing assignments earlier this year.

Speaking during a conversation on Fever FM, Bagchi discussed how the playback singing industry often categorises singers into specific musical niches.

‘Artists Are Often Put Into Boxes’

During the discussion, Bagchi said that singers are frequently limited to certain styles of music once they become known for a particular type of song.

“The system tends to put you into a box,” she explained. “The industry functions like a service structure where singers are expected to fulfil a particular purpose. If you try to do something different, it doesn’t always receive the same support.”

She added that projects that do not fit the industry’s expectations sometimes receive less financial backing or promotional support.

According to Bagchi, this kind of categorisation can prevent artists from exploring the full range of their musical abilities.

Comments on Arijit Singh’s Musical Range

Bagchi pointed out that even widely celebrated singers can face similar limitations.

She cited artists like Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal, saying their vocal range is extraordinary but the playback system sometimes restricts how their talent is used.

Referring to Arijit Singh, she noted that he has performed many emotional and romantic tracks throughout his career.

“The number of crying or romantic songs Arijit has sung is enormous,” she said, adding that it took time for audiences to see him deliver something different like Binte Dil.

Bagchi also reflected on her own career, saying she hopes to receive similarly diverse opportunities in the future.

Arijit Singh’s Announcement

On January 27, Arijit Singh announced that he would no longer accept new playback singing projects, describing the decision as the end of a “wonderful journey.”

In a message shared with fans on X, the singer expressed gratitude for the support he has received over the years.

However, he clarified that while he will not take on new assignments, several previously recorded songs are still scheduled for release over the coming months.

Arijit Singh’s Iconic Songs

Over the past decade, Arijit Singh has delivered some of the most popular tracks in modern Bollywood music.

His widely loved songs include Tum Hi Ho, Channa Mereya, Agar Tum Saath Ho, Raabta, Tera Yaar Hoon Main, and Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage.

He also recently lent his voice to Hum To Tere Hi Liye The, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.

The singer has won two National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer honours for his performances in Binte Dil and Kesariya.
