Guruvayur Temple Conducts Cleansing Ritual After Non-Hindu Vlogger Washes Feet in Temple Pond

Thrissur, Kerala: The famous Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple in Kerala has begun purification rituals at its sacred pond after a non-Hindu social media influencer filmed herself washing her feet there — an act that temple authorities said violated long-standing customs.

The Guruvayur Devaswom confirmed that the incident involved Jasmin Jaffer, a former Bigg Boss contestant and popular vlogger. In a video posted on social media, she was seen cleaning her feet in the temple pond, unaware of the religious restrictions that prohibit non-Hindus from entering sacred areas or using temple facilities.

Purification Rituals and Temporary Darshan Restrictions

According to officials, the act rendered the pond “impure,” prompting a punyahakarma (cleansing ceremony) scheduled for today. The rituals will include a repetition of six days of pujas, encompassing 18 pujas and 18 sheevelis.

As part of the purification process, darshan has been temporarily suspended from 5 am to noon, and devotees will be allowed into the nalambalam (inner temple precinct) only after the rituals are completed. The Devaswom has requested devotees to cooperate with the temporary restrictions.

Complaint Filed and Legal Proceedings

OB Arun Kumar, the Devaswom administrator, has filed a formal complaint with the temple police, citing a breach of temple sanctity and violation of a Kerala High Court order that prohibits photography and videography in restricted temple zones.

Police have informed the court that a case will be registered in accordance with the directive. The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many locals expressing concern over repeated violations of temple traditions by visitors unaware of the rules.

Vlogger Issues Public Apology

After the controversy erupted, Jasmin Jaffer deleted the video and issued a public apology. She claimed she was unaware of the temple’s restrictions, adding that her intention was not to offend anyone’s religious sentiments.

In her statement, she said, “I didn’t mean any disrespect. I was not aware that washing my feet in the pond was against temple customs. I sincerely apologise to all devotees and temple authorities.”

Guruvayur Temple’s Cultural Significance

The Guruvayur Temple, often referred to as Bhooloka Vaikuntha (Heaven on Earth), is one of Kerala’s most revered Hindu shrines, dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple maintains strict entry rules, allowing only Hindus inside its premises, and has repeatedly urged visitors to respect its centuries-old customs and regulations.
