Dia Mirza Reveals She Mortgaged Her Home to Make Bobby Jasoos: “I Didn’t Ask Vidya Balan for a Discount”

Dia Mirza has recalled the extraordinary financial risk she took to produce Bobby Jasoos, revealing that she mortgaged the first home she bought and took a bank loan after studios and financiers withdrew from the project. The actor-producer also said she paid Vidya Balan her full fee, describing it as one of the strongest salaries of the actress’ career at the time.

Dia Mirza has spent more than two decades in the Hindi film industry, working as an actor as well as a producer. But one of the biggest professional risks of her career came when she decided to back Bobby Jasoos, the 2014 Vidya Balan-led mystery comedy.

The project had already been developed, the cast and crew were in place and Vidya Balan had committed her dates. Then, according to Dia, the financial backing that had been expected for the film suddenly disappeared.

Rather than abandon the project, Dia decided to finance it herself.

Dia Mirza Mortgaged Her First Home to Make Bobby Jasoos

Recalling the experience, Dia said she mortgaged the first home she had purchased to ensure that Bobby Jasoos could go into production.

She explained that the film had already been written and that Vidya Balan had committed to the project. With the team assembled, abandoning the film was not something Dia wanted to consider.

When the studios and financiers backed out, the production team was left facing a major funding gap.

Dia said she responded by taking a bank loan and putting her home up as collateral.

The decision involved a significant personal financial risk, but she remained convinced that the story deserved to be made.

“I mortgaged my first home that I had ever bought to be able to tell the story that I wanted to tell,” Dia recalled.

Why Dia Was Determined to Back a Woman-Led Film

At the time, Bobby Jasoos represented another important aspect of Dia’s career as a producer: backing a female-led story.

Vidya Balan played the central character, with the film built around her performance. Dia said she was proud of the project and the performances that came out of it.

Her decision also reflected a broader ambition to produce stories that might not always fit conventional commercial formulas.

Dia had entered production after establishing herself as an actor. She launched Born Free Entertainment with Zayed Khan and filmmaker Sahil Sangha, and later started One India Stories LLP, focusing on content she has described as meaningful, diverse and women-led.

Dia Mirza Says She Paid Vidya Balan Her Full Fee

One detail from the Bobby Jasoos experience remains particularly important to Dia: she did not ask Vidya Balan to reduce her remuneration despite the production’s financial difficulties.

According to Dia, she paid Balan her full agreed fee and said she believed the actress deserved to be compensated appropriately for carrying a film centred around her character.

“I didn’t ask Vidya for a discount. I paid her her full salary,” Dia recalled.

She further said she believed it was important to recognise the value of a woman leading a film in the same way a male star would be compensated for a comparable responsibility.

Dia described the decision as something she remained proud of and said the experience also resulted in a lasting friendship with Balan.

Dia’s experience with producing also came with professional challenges.

She previously recalled being warned that moving into production could affect her acting career. According to Dia, she was told that producers might stop considering her for acting opportunities once she became a producer.

She said that concern eventually became a reality for a period, with acting work drying up.

Dia also recalled approaching a prominent producer for an acting opportunity and being told that her decision to produce films had changed the perception around her career.

The actor-producer said she eventually had to challenge the assumption that becoming a producer meant she no longer wanted to work in front of the camera.

Bobby Jasoos Faced a Difficult Box-Office Run

Despite the determination behind the production, Bobby Jasoos did not perform strongly during its theatrical run.

Reports at the time put the film’s production budget at around ₹26 crore, while reported worldwide theatrical earnings were around ₹20 crore. These figures can vary across trade and box-office databases.

However, the film’s subsequent commercial deals helped Dia recover from the initial financial pressure.

She said Bobby Jasoos secured a strong satellite deal as well as a studio deal, allowing her to repay the bank loan and eventually release the mortgage on her home.

That outcome meant the personal financial gamble did not leave her permanently burdened by the production.

Dia Mirza’s Journey as a Producer Continues

Dia’s association with film production has continued well beyond Bobby Jasoos.

She later launched One India Stories LLP, a production venture focused on diverse storytelling and projects involving women.

The banner has also been associated with short films including Aasmani and Panha, allowing Dia to continue exploring content beyond conventional mainstream cinema.

Her experience with Bobby Jasoos remains one of the clearest examples of the personal commitment she has brought to producing.
