Sharbari Wagh Says Music Plays a Key Role in Storytelling in Ye Prem Mol Liya

Sharbari Wagh recalled growing up with iconic Hindi film songs and shared how working with Sooraj Barjatya helped her understand the storytelling and emotional layers behind Rajshri’s musical sequences.

Actress Sharbari Wagh is preparing for the release of her upcoming family drama Ye Prem Mol Liya, co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Anupam Kher. At the launch of the film’s title track, the actor spoke about the importance of music in storytelling and recalled her childhood connection with some of Hindi cinema’s most popular songs.

Wagh specifically mentioned songs such as “Didi Tera Devar Deewana” and “Maiya Yashoda”, which she grew up listening to. She recalled that whenever the team filmed the musical portions of Ye Prem Mol Liya, Barjatya would share stories and memories from the making of some of his earlier classics.

“Whenever we shot the songs, Sooraj sir would share stories from the time these classic songs were filmed. That was my favourite part, as I have loved these songs since childhood.”

For Wagh, those conversations offered a connection between the songs she had known since childhood and the filmmaking process behind them.

She added that Barjatya also shared behind-the-scenes insights with her, which she attempted to incorporate into her performance.

“Sooraj sir shared some insider information, and I tried to apply it.”

Wagh also reflected on how the experience changed her understanding of songs in Hindi cinema.

According to the actress, working on Ye Prem Mol Liya helped her see that a film song is not limited to choreography, costumes and visual spectacle. She said emotional relationships and family dynamics can also be woven into musical sequences.

She described this as an important aspect of understanding the Rajshri filmmaking style, particularly the way songs can contribute to a film’s narrative.

Wagh explained that observing Barjatya’s approach made her realise how several elements need to work together within a song, including the emotions of the family and the connections between characters.

She further noted that songs can help move a film’s story ahead rather than functioning only as standalone musical moments.
