Holi has always been one of India’s most vibrant festivals, and for decades, it held a special place in Bollywood’s social calendar. There was a time when leading film families hosted extravagant Holi gatherings that became legendary within the industry.

No conversation about Bollywood’s Holi traditions is complete without mentioning Raj Kapoor. The legendary actor-filmmaker’s Holi party at RK Studios was once considered the most awaited event in Hindi cinema.

The celebrations were known for their scale and star power. Icons like Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan were frequent attendees. Raj Kapoor and his entire family would personally participate in the festivities, creating an atmosphere filled with music, colours, and camaraderie.

Today, those grand gatherings are a thing of the past. The Kapoor family no longer hosts public Holi parties, marking the end of an era that once defined Bollywood’s festive spirit.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Holi at Pratiksha and Jalsa

After the Kapoor celebrations, Amitabh Bachchan carried forward the tradition in his own way. From his earlier residence, Pratiksha, to his iconic bungalow Jalsa, Big B hosted vibrant Holi events attended by close friends and industry colleagues.

These gatherings were widely covered and became symbolic of Bollywood’s festive culture. In recent years, however, the celebrations have turned more intimate, with the Bachchan family observing the festival privately.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Colourful Gatherings at Mannat

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan also played host to memorable Holi celebrations at his Mumbai home, Mannat. Photos and videos of Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan celebrating with friends frequently went viral on social media.

From Salman Khan to several other prominent celebrities, many would attend these gatherings, making Mannat a lively hub during the festival.

But like other star-hosted events, these large-scale Holi parties have gradually stopped, with celebrations now limited to close family circles.

Why the Tradition Faded

Changing lifestyles, tighter schedules, increased security concerns, and evolving industry dynamics are often cited as reasons behind the decline of these lavish gatherings. Social media has also transformed how celebrities engage with fans, reducing the need for large public festivities.

While Bollywood still celebrates Holi, the era of open-house, star-studded colour extravaganzas seems to belong to a different time — one remembered fondly by fans and industry insiders alike.
