Filmmaker Anik Dutta Hospitalised After Reported Fall at Kolkata Residence

Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta has reportedly been admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata after suffering injuries in an accident near Gariahat.

According to media reports, the director fell from the terrace of his wife’s residence and was later shifted to a private hospital in Dhakuria, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Reports suggest that his condition is critical, though no official medical statement had been released at the time of publication.

Anik Dutta is widely recognised in Bengali cinema for directing critically acclaimed films such as Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012), Borunbabur Bondhu (2020), Aparajito (2022) and Joto Kando Kolkatatei (2025).

Career and Film Journey

Dutta made his directorial debut with Bhooter Bhabishyat, a supernatural comedy-drama that gained significant popularity among Bengali audiences. The film featured actors including Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Parambrata Chatterjee, Paran Bandopadhyay, Swastika Mukherjee, Mir Afsar Ali and Saswata Chatterjee.

Over the years, he established himself as a distinctive filmmaker known for blending satire, nostalgia and social commentary in his storytelling.

His 2022 film Aparajito, inspired by the making of Satyajit Ray’s classic Pather Panchali, received widespread appreciation for its tribute to Bengali cinema and filmmaking traditions.

Dutta’s most recent directorial venture, Joto Kando Kolkatatei, starred Abir Chatterjee, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed and Dulal Lahiri in key roles. The film was released in September last year.

In 2019, controversy emerged after his film Bhobishyoter Bhoot reportedly faced difficulties in theatrical screenings. The filmmaker had also questioned the extensive use of political imagery during events linked to the Kolkata International Film Festival.
