Aishwarya Lekshmi Recalls Caste Question During Rural Tamil Nadu Shoot: ‘What Difference Does It Make?’

Aishwarya Lekshmi has opened up about an unexpected cultural experience she encountered while shooting for an upcoming film in Erode, Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to television presenter Ranjini Haridas on her YouTube channel, the actor recalled spending time in a rural location while filming portions of a story set in 1996. She described the environment as markedly different from what she was accustomed to and said the experience made her reflect on social practices she had not encountered personally before.

Aishwarya Lekshmi Says the Village Felt Like Another Era

According to Aishwarya, the location where the team was shooting had an atmosphere that felt significantly removed from contemporary urban life.

She explained that because portions of the film are set in 1996, she repeatedly questioned director about whether the setting might appear too historically distant to audiences. The surroundings, she said, had a distinctive culture and lifestyle that contributed to the period feel of the film.

It was during her interactions with people in the area that she encountered a question that surprised her.

Actor Recalls Being Asked About Her Gotra

Aishwarya said some people in the village asked her about her gotra, a lineage identifier associated with certain Hindu communities.

The actor said the question was unfamiliar to her and recalled being surprised because she had never been asked about her gotra during her life in Kerala.

She said the experience even gave her a new appreciation for what she described as differences in everyday social interactions between the communities she was accustomed to and the environment where the film was being shot.

‘What Difference Does It Make to You?’

Aishwarya acknowledged that she found the interaction difficult to understand.

Her response, as recounted during the interview, was essentially a question about why her caste or lineage should matter to the people asking about it.

The actor also took care to qualify her comments. She stressed that she was not suggesting everyone in the region behaved this way, but was describing something that happened to her personally during the shoot.

That distinction is important because the experience she described relates to specific interactions rather than a claim about an entire community or region.

Aishwarya Lekshmi’s Journey From Medicine to Cinema

Aishwarya Lekshmi began her acting career after training and working in medicine. The Thiruvananthapuram-born actor made her film debut with Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela in 2017.

The same year, she gained wider recognition with Aashiq Abu’s Mayaanadhi, in which she starred opposite Tovino Thomas.

She subsequently appeared in films including Varathan, Kaanekkaane, Ammu, Kumari, Ponniyin Selvan: I, Ponniyin Selvan: II, Gatta Kusthi, Maaman and Hello Mummy.

Her filmography spans Malayalam and Tamil cinema, and her recent projects have continued to take her into different characters and settings.
