Shraddha Srinath Reflects on 10 Years of U Turn, Reinvention, and the Rise of Regional Cinema

A decade after U Turn changed the course of her life and career, actor Shraddha Srinath is looking back at the journey with gratitude, honesty, and a renewed passion for storytelling. From leaving behind a successful legal career to becoming one of the most recognizable faces across South Indian cinema, Shraddha says every step has been worth it.

“I didn’t enter the film industry with a godfather or a grand launch plan. I wore whatever I had, did my own makeup, attended auditions, and then U Turn happened,” Shraddha said during a recent interaction with IndyaStory.

As the acclaimed thriller completes 10 years, the actor reflected on the early struggles, evolving audience tastes, and the growing pressures actors face in the age of social media.

“I Thought I Wouldn’t Get U Turn”

Recalling her audition for director Pawan Kumar’s U Turn, Shraddha admitted she was extremely nervous.

“Pawan Kumar told me I didn’t sound like a typical middle-class Kannadiga girl, so I honestly believed I wouldn’t get selected,” she shared.

However, during additional shoots, she sensed things were changing.

“While we were filming some scenes, he casually asked his assistant director to keep those clips aside for behind-the-scenes footage. That’s when I realized I had probably been finalized for the film even before the official confirmation,” she added.

Shraddha also remembered the intimate atmosphere surrounding the film’s premiere.

“The team had even created U Turn merchandise, and those T-shirts became entry passes for the screening. It felt very personal and special,” she said.

The actor believes her debut performance still remains close to audiences because of its rawness and sincerity.

“My friends still tell me that my performance in U Turn feels the most authentic. Maybe it’s because there’s innocence in your first film,” she noted.

Transition Into Tamil and Telugu Cinema Happened Naturally

Following the success of U Turn, Shraddha quickly moved into Tamil and Telugu cinema with films like Vikram Vedha alongside R Madhavan and Jersey with Nani.

She insists the transition was never carefully planned.

“I think people trusted me because of U Turn and my association with Pawan Kumar’s team. Opportunities came naturally,” she explained.

Still, adapting to different industries came with its own challenges.

“As a Kannada-speaking actor entering Tamil and Telugu cinema, I had insecurities. I worried whether people would feel I didn’t belong there,” Shraddha admitted.

Having spent much of her childhood in army cantonments across North India, she initially struggled to fully understand local cultural nuances.

“When I joined the sets of Vikram Vedha, I became like a sponge. I observed how people spoke, behaved, and interacted. I followed the same process in Telugu cinema too,” she said.

Over time, the actor became more comfortable navigating multiple languages and industries.

“I Did Pan-India Films Before It Became a Trend”

Long before “pan-India cinema” became a popular industry term, Shraddha says regional films were already reaching audiences across the country.

“I remember U Turn had very limited screenings in cities like Chennai and Delhi, but audiences still came to watch it because of word of mouth,” she recalled.

According to her, that period marked an exciting shift for Kannada cinema.

“It felt incredible seeing a Kannada film being appreciated outside Karnataka and at film festivals. Today, audiences are much more open to regional stories, and OTT platforms have helped bridge language barriers,” she said.

Shraddha believes the boundaries between industries are gradually disappearing as viewers prioritize storytelling over language.

“I Prefer Being Called an Actor, Not a Heroine”

One detail that often catches attention on Shraddha Srinath’s social media profiles is her bio: Actor, not heroine.

Explaining the choice, she said the word “heroine” often carries outdated stereotypes in Indian cinema.

“The term comes with a very fixed image — someone bubbly, shy, glamorous, and eventually rescued by the hero. But I came into this industry to perform meaningful roles,” she explained.

Shraddha admitted she briefly experimented with more commercial characters but eventually realized those roles didn’t feel authentic to her.

“When I performed certain dialogues, they felt emotionally dishonest. It felt forced, so I stepped away from that space,” she said.

Instead, she now gravitates toward emotionally layered and realistic storytelling.

“That’s why I enjoyed films like Irugapatru. I connect more with stories rooted in real emotions and human relationships,” she added.

Social Media Pressure Has Changed the Industry

Shraddha also spoke candidly about how drastically the entertainment industry has evolved over the last decade due to social media.

“Actors today are not just performers anymore. They are also brands and online personalities,” she said.

According to her, maintaining visibility online has become almost as important as delivering successful films.

“If you want people to remember you, there’s pressure to stay constantly active online. Sometimes visibility feels equally important as the work itself,” she observed.

However, Shraddha admitted social media engagement does not come naturally to her personality.

“I’m not someone who constantly wants to share every thought or moment online. But if you stay away from it completely, you can sometimes feel left behind,” she said.

A friend once advised her to approach digital platforms differently.

“He told me to treat social media like a game and simply enjoy it. I think everyone is trying to find their own audience and genuine connection,” she added.

Looking Ahead: Historical Dramas, Sci-Fi, and Action Roles

After building a strong filmography filled with romantic dramas and emotional stories, Shraddha says she now wants to explore more challenging territory.

“I want to spice things up a little and keep reinventing myself,” she said with a laugh.

The actor expressed interest in historical dramas, science fiction projects, emotionally intense characters, and physically demanding roles.

Films like Kantara and Ponniyin Selvan represent the kind of cinematic universes she hopes to explore in the future.

“I would love to play a queen someday. Or maybe even an agent,” she said.
