A slimmer appearance is often celebrated as a sign of better health, but a reduction in body weight does not always tell the full story. The distinction has come into focus after actor Shoaib Ibrahim recently showed his wife, actor Dipika Kakar, during one of his YouTube vlogs, where her noticeably slimmer appearance attracted attention from viewers.
Shoaib did not disclose a specific amount of weight that Dipika had lost. While the couple worked out together, however, he commented on the visible change and linked it to her treatment, diet and other lifestyle changes.
“She has reduced a lot of weight, like in the olden days. She has lost a lot of weight with the treatments, diet, etc,” Shoaib said in the vlog.
Dipika, who was seen exercising alongside him, also reflected on the transformation, saying, “It has been a long time….4-5 years later, I have reduced.”

Being Thinner Does Not Automatically Mean Being Healthier
According to consultant dietitian and fitness expert Garima Goyal, the circumstances surrounding weight loss matter considerably.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Goyal explained that intentional weight loss achieved through appropriate diet, physical activity and lifestyle changes is different from weight loss caused by illness or medical treatment.
“Weight loss is not always intentional, and being thinner does not automatically mean someone is healthier,” Goyal said.
During prolonged illness or treatment, she explained, unintentional weight loss can sometimes involve the loss of muscle mass and nutritional reserves. In such situations, maintaining adequate nourishment and physical strength can become more important than simply reducing the number on the scale.

Add Hunterfly on GoogleThe Weighing Scale Cannot Tell the Whole Story
Weight is only one measure of health, and a person’s appearance cannot reveal everything happening inside the body.
Goyal pointed out that factors such as energy levels, muscle strength, nutritional status, recovery and an individual’s overall medical condition should also be considered when evaluating whether weight loss is beneficial.
“Social media often celebrates a smaller body immediately, but the weighing scale alone cannot tell us whether weight loss is healthy, intentional, or beneficial,” she said.

Add Hunterfly on GoogleThis distinction becomes particularly important when a person is recovering from an illness or undergoing medical treatment. A lower body weight may not necessarily represent improved health if it has been accompanied by muscle loss, weakness or inadequate nutrition.
Treatment Can Change Nutritional Needs
People undergoing medical treatment may have very different nutritional requirements from someone who is deliberately trying to lose weight.
Goyal stressed that dietary decisions should be individualized according to a person’s medical condition, symptoms and treatment plan, alongside guidance from their treating doctors and an appropriate nutrition professional.
“The goal may not necessarily be further weight loss,” she explained. In some circumstances, the priority may instead be maintaining sufficient calorie intake, protein, muscle mass, strength and quality of life.
That means following another person’s diet simply because it appears to have produced visible results can be inappropriate—and potentially harmful—particularly for someone dealing with a significant health condition.
Dipika Kakar Has Previously Discussed Lifestyle Changes
Dipika has previously spoken about making gradual changes to her lifestyle, including modifying her diet and incorporating walking into her routine.
She has also cautioned people against blindly copying another person’s diet or exercise plan, particularly when health concerns are involved.
Her recent appearance in Shoaib’s vlog therefore provides limited information about her overall health. While the couple have discussed her weight reduction, neither the vlog nor her comments establish that a particular body weight is healthier for her.
Why Muscle and Strength Matter During Recovery
When someone loses weight during a prolonged illness or treatment, preserving muscle can become an important consideration.
Muscle loss can affect strength, mobility and the ability to carry out everyday activities. Adequate protein and calorie intake, appropriate physical activity and individualized medical guidance may therefore be important depending on the person’s condition.
This is one reason experts caution against viewing rapid or substantial weight loss as an achievement without understanding how it occurred.
A person intentionally losing excess body fat under appropriate guidance is in a different situation from someone losing weight because their body is struggling to maintain adequate nutrition during illness.
Avoid Comparing Your Diet With Someone Else’s
The discussion surrounding Dipika’s changing appearance also highlights a broader issue with celebrity health stories.
A diet or exercise routine that appears to work for one person may not be appropriate for another. Age, medical history, medications, symptoms, activity levels, nutritional status and treatment can all affect what an individual needs.
For someone undergoing treatment, Goyal’s advice is clear: nutrition should be planned around the person’s specific medical circumstances rather than around social-media trends or another individual’s weight-loss journey.
The Bottom Line
Weight loss is not automatically a sign of improved health.
When it is intentional and achieved through an appropriate combination of nutrition, exercise and sustainable lifestyle changes, losing excess body fat can be beneficial for some people. But weight loss associated with illness or medical treatment can have very different implications, particularly if it involves muscle loss or inadequate nutritional intake.
Dipika Kakar’s slimmer appearance may have attracted attention online, but appearance alone cannot determine whether a person is healthier. As the expert guidance makes clear, strength, nutrition, recovery, energy and overall medical condition matter alongside body weight.
