India’s harvest festivals mark a joyful transition from winter’s hush to a season of colour, warmth, and renewal. Lohri in the north, Sankranti across the west and south, and Bihu and Pongal in the east and south signal not only celebration but also an opportunity to dress with intention — merging heritage with contemporary style.

Dressing with Purpose

Festive fashion this winter leans towards comfort, craftsmanship, and authenticity, rather than fleeting trends. As Nishant Malhotra, Founder of Weaverstory, explains:

“Festivals like Makar Sankranti and Lohri reflect the shift from cold to warmth and stillness to movement. Celebration doesn’t need to be loud — it often lives in colour, texture, and the act of dressing with intention. Festive dressing is about comfort, confidence, and continuity, honouring craft without treating it as costume.”

Lohri Evenings: Layers, Warmth, and Statement Silhouettes

Winter evenings during Lohri invite rich textures and deeper tones. Salwar suits remain timeless, but modern styling adds sophistication:

  • Jewel-toned kurtas paired with tailored trousers
  • Phiran-style layers or long woollen jackets for warmth
  • Pashmina shawls in natural dyes or handwoven patterns

The Farshi salwar set, enjoying a resurgence this season, offers floor-grazing drama with practical winter fabrics like velvet, silk blends, or cotton. Paired with shorter kurtas, minimalist jewellery, and structured capes, it becomes a modern festive classic — perfect for intimate gatherings or outdoor bonfires.

Sankranti, Pongal, and Bihu: Bright Mornings, Handwoven Stories

Daytime harvest festivals call for lighter, brighter aesthetics. Handwoven saris take centre stage:

  • Vibrant Ikats and Jamdanis
  • Banarasi silks and Maheshwaris
  • Regional cotton weaves

Shades inspired by the sun and earth — mustard, vermilion, turmeric yellow, parrot green, deep reds — resonate particularly for morning poojas.

Jewellery enhances the storytelling:

  • Temple jewellery and heirloom gold
  • Silver filigree and floral adornments
  • Fresh flowers like gajras or marigold-inspired accessories

Layering a sari with a fine woollen blouse, silk shawl, or lightweight pashmina ensures warmth without compromising elegance.

Timeless Festive Aesthetics

Malhotra highlights that today’s festive dressing prioritizes awareness over excess:

“Handwoven textiles, natural fibres, and colours inspired by sun and earth carry grounding energy. They connect us not just to tradition, but to the people and processes behind what we wear.”

This approach aligns seamlessly with harvest festivals, where celebrations honour the land, labour, and gratitude behind every tradition.
