Vijay Varma Opens Up About Battling Severe Depression, Credits Ira Khan for Support
Actor Vijay Varma has opened up for the first time about his struggle with severe depression and anxiety during a candid conversation with Rhea Chakraborty on her podcast. He revealed how isolation, mental strain, and the pressures of work contributed to his mental health challenges, and how he sought help through therapy, yoga, and support from friends.
Vijay’s Mental Health Journey
Vijay described feeling completely alone while living in Mumbai. “I was all alone in an apartment. Luckily, I had a small terrace where I could see the sky and be with the elements. Otherwise, I would’ve gone mad… I couldn’t move from my couch for four days. What’s going on?” he shared.
Ira Khan’s Support
He credited Aamir Khan’s daughter, Ira Khan, as a crucial support system during his darkest days. “Ira and Gulshan [Devaiah] were like my little support system. Ira was assisting on Dahaad, and we had become good friends during the shoot. We’d video call on Zoom, have dinners together. She was the first to say, ‘Vijay, I think you need to start moving a little.’ She did Zoom workouts and encouraged me to work out,” Vijay said.
Eventually, Vijay consulted a therapist over Zoom, who diagnosed him with depression and anxiety and suggested medication. Vijay initially chose to manage his condition through therapy, yoga, and surya namaskars, combining mental and physical wellness practices to recover.
