Upasana Konidela’s Advice Sparks Debate

A seemingly simple discussion about marriage and career choices has turned into one of the internet’s hottest debates this week. During a session at IIT Hyderabad, Upasana Konidela, wife of Telugu superstar Ram Charan, asked students about their plans for marriage. She observed more men raising their hands, while many women appeared focused on their careers.

Upasana celebrated this trend as a sign of progressive India, encouraging students to set goals and build unstoppable futures.

“It’s wonderful to see young women prioritizing their ambitions,” she remarked, highlighting evolving priorities in modern society.

Not everyone agreed with her message. Dr. Datta, an AIIMS Delhi doctor, cautioned that marriage and career are not mutually exclusive:

“Young people shouldn’t dismiss the value of a supportive partner. Oversimplifying adulthood can mislead impressionable students,” he said.

Similarly, IIT–IIM alumnus Deepak Shanmugasundaram highlighted the practical benefits of early marriage, such as smoother parenting and more time for grandparents to bond with grandchildren.

Surgeon Amit Thadani shared his own experience:

“I married at 23 and became a father at 25. Having kids young allowed me to enjoy activities with them that would be harder later in life.”

Physician Aarathi Bellary added that biological timelines and financial independence are critical factors, emphasizing that women should make choices based on personal circumstances rather than following a fixed blueprint.

I too advise people to marry early—not out of duty or anything like that.

Having kids early makes life easier and gives your parents as much time as possible to enjoy their grandchildren. https://t.co/Cjmead5UhA

UK-Based Doctor Criticizes Privileged Perspective

The strongest critique came from UK-based doctor Sunita Sayammagaru, who argued that Upasana’s own path—marrying young and pursuing her career afterward—does not reflect the average woman’s reality in India.

No eggs, no opinion
No uterus, no opinion
Period.
Dear Women, they are yours! Biological and career clocks tick away at the same time, you do you, based on your circumstances.

Married at 25, child at 31, Widowed at 38. I cant tell you, not a single day goes, where I can't thank…

“Average women shouldn’t follow rich people blindly,” she said, pointing out that prioritizing wealth and career over marriage could push motherhood into a biologically challenging age bracket. She also noted that egg freezing is not a guaranteed safety net, and personal relationships shouldn’t be indefinitely postponed for career goals.

Sunita concluded that Upasana’s advice missed an opportunity to promote balance, companionship, and shared growth, instead framing marriage and career as opposing choices.

I would politely disagree.

1) Upasana is 36 years old now ( born 1989) Ram Charan is 40 years old (born 1985) . They were best friends since college and they married in 2012. So, Upasana was 23 years when she got married and he was 27 years old.

They married young. And she is… https://t.co/bnhaFFYJvs

The Online Reaction

Upasana’s post ignited widespread discussion across social media platforms. Many appreciated her emphasis on ambition, while others echoed the concerns of professionals, arguing that the advice may be unrealistic for most young women in India.
