Hema, 20, daughter of Sahab Singh, lives in Delhi, where she runs a fruit shop. From a young age, Hema embraced a lifestyle and mannerisms traditionally associated with boys. During visits to her maternal home in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, she met Pooja, an 18-year-old resident of the same village.
A Love That Grew Over Three Years
Their acquaintance blossomed into a friendship, followed by regular conversations on mobile phones. Over time, the bond deepened into a romantic relationship. After three years, the couple decided to formalize their relationship and married in Delhi, staying true to their love despite societal pressure.
Initially, Hema’s parents were hesitant, and Pooja’s family opposed the relationship strongly. However, with time, both families came to terms with the union and fully accepted the couple.

When Hema brought Pooja to Charkhari, a large crowd gathered to see the couple. Traditional rituals were observed, including muh dikhai, congratulatory songs, and customary post-marriage ceremonies, all performed with joy and enthusiasm.
Pooja expressed her wholehearted acceptance of Hema as her husband, remaining steadfast despite her family’s initial opposition. Hema revealed plans for gender transition surgery in the future, yet affirmed the couple’s commitment to staying together regardless.
Hema runs a fruit shop, while Pooja manages the household. Hema’s mother, Phoolbati, fully supports the marriage, stating, “Our happiness lies in our children’s happiness.” She also added, “We have planned Kirtan at home to welcome the couple and invited 30-40 guests.”
