Prime Video’s adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance novel The Love Hypothesis has arrived, bringing the fake-dating story of biology Ph.D. candidate Olive and professor Adam to the screen.

Starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, the film follows Olive as she enters a pretend relationship with the famously stern professor for reasons that initially have little to do with romance. What starts as a practical arrangement gradually develops into a real relationship.

However, according to a Slate review focused specifically on the film’s intimate scenes, the adaptation struggles to reproduce one of the defining qualities of Hazelwood’s novel: its unusually frank and sensual approach to romance. Both Slate critics ultimately gave the film 1 out of 10 for its sex scenes.

What Is The Love Hypothesis About?

The Love Hypothesis follows Olive, a biology Ph.D. candidate at Stanford, who agrees to fake-date Adam, a tenured professor known for his intimidating personality.

Olive needs the pretend relationship to convince a friend that she has moved on romantically, while Adam has his own professional reasons for maintaining the appearance of a stable relationship.

The arrangement gradually becomes complicated as the pair’s pretend romance begins to develop into something genuine.

Lili Reinhart plays Olive, while British actor Tom Bateman portrays Adam.

The Movie Takes a Much Softer Approach to Romance

One of Slate’s central criticisms is that the movie does not build enough physical or emotional tension between Olive and Adam before their relationship becomes intimate.

The review notes that the film takes a long time to reach its first sex scene. More importantly, that scene is also the only major sexual encounter shown during the film.

The earlier stages of the romance contain moments of forced intimacy because the couple are pretending to be together, but the review argues that the movie does not sufficiently show the gradual escalation of genuine attraction between them.

That absence becomes particularly noticeable because Hazelwood’s novel is known for spending considerably more time exploring the couple’s physical and emotional chemistry.

Slate Critics Say the Chemistry Never Fully Develops

According to the review, the few kisses shared by Olive and Adam work reasonably well, but the film offers little beyond them for much of its runtime.

The critics specifically point to the lack of those transitional romantic moments in which characters realise that their attraction is becoming difficult to control.

Instead, the relationship remains comparatively restrained until the pair finally take a significant step forward.

The result, in the reviewer’s assessment, is a romance that feels less physically charged than the source material.

The Hotel Scene Becomes the Film’s Main Intimate Moment

The film’s principal intimate scene arrives after Olive and Adam attend a science conference in Boston.

After spending time together, they return to a hotel where circumstances have left them sharing a room. A series of familiar romantic-comedy beats eventually leads to their first major intimate encounter.

Slate’s review argues that the scene itself is relatively brief and visually restrained, relying more on atmosphere, music and soft lighting than on the heightened sensuality associated with Hazelwood’s novel.

That difference became one of the review’s main points of comparison between the book and movie.

Why Book Fans May Feel the Adaptation Is Missing Something

Ali Hazelwood’s novels are known for combining STEM settings, ambitious scientists and academics, workplace pressures and highly detailed romantic relationships.

The Love Hypothesis is particularly dependent on the contrast between Olive’s relatively limited experience of attraction and Adam’s imposing presence.

The Slate review argues that the film removes much of the intimate conversation and character development that makes their eventual relationship significant in the novel.

In the book, Olive’s unusual relationship with attraction is an important part of why becoming intimate with Adam represents such a major emotional development. The movie, according to the review, gives considerably less space to that internal journey.

Prime Video Turns The Love Hypothesis Into a More Conventional Rom-Com

One of the broader criticisms in the review is that the adaptation appears to have been shaped into a more conventional romantic comedy.

Slate’s critics question whether Hazelwood’s particular brand of romance translates naturally into that format.

The source novel combines academic environments, personal vulnerability, sexism in STEM spaces and a very direct approach to adult romance. According to the review, removing too much of the latter elements risks stripping away some of what makes Hazelwood’s books distinctive.

Rather than feeling like a fully faithful translation of that tone, the movie is described as a lighter, more conventional romance.

The Love Hypothesis Sex Scene Rating: 1/10

The most striking part of the Slate assessment is its deliberately narrow focus on the film’s intimate content.

Nadira Goffe gave The Love Hypothesis a 1/10 on the sex front, saying she felt very little from the film’s only major intimate sequence.

Rebecca Onion also awarded the movie 1/10, arguing that the adaptation does not deliver the level of sensuality readers might expect from Hazelwood’s source material.

The ratings are specifically the critics’ assessment of the film’s sex scenes, not an overall numerical rating of the movie.

The Book vs. The Movie

The biggest difference identified by the review is therefore not simply how explicit the movie is, but how much emphasis it places on physical intimacy as part of the couple’s emotional development.

The novel spends more time exploring Olive and Adam’s attraction, vulnerability and conversations surrounding intimacy. The film compresses much of that material and presents the relationship in a more streamlined way.

For viewers unfamiliar with the book, that may simply register as a relatively restrained romantic comedy. For readers who enjoyed Hazelwood’s distinctive combination of academic romance and sensual storytelling, however, the adaptation may feel significantly different.

Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman Lead the Adaptation

Lili Reinhart takes on the role of Olive, while Tom Bateman plays Adam.

The casting gives the film two performers capable of carrying a traditional romantic-comedy setup, but the critical response suggests that the script and adaptation choices ultimately determine how much chemistry reaches the screen.

The film attempts to preserve the central fake-dating premise and the contrast between its two leads while simplifying some of the more adult elements of the novel.

Final Verdict

The Love Hypothesis succeeds in bringing Ali Hazelwood’s popular fake-dating premise to Prime Video, but the supplied Slate review argues that the film loses much of the heat and emotional intimacy that made the novel distinctive.

Its principal weakness, according to the review, is not merely that there is only one major sex scene. It is that the film does not spend enough time building the physical tension and emotional vulnerability leading to that moment.

For audiences looking for a straightforward romantic comedy, that softer approach may be perfectly serviceable. For readers expecting the more sensual, STEM-focused romance associated with Hazelwood’s novel, however, the adaptation may come across as considerably tamer.

Slate’s critics ultimately gave the film 1/10 for its sex scenes, making their assessment clear: the movie may preserve the basic love story, but it does not recreate the same level of heat found in the book.
