Producer Ekta Kapoor is planning to revisit The Dirty Picture with a sequel, 15 years after the original film became a major success. The upcoming project is still in the planning stage, with details about the lead actor, supporting cast and release date yet to be announced.
Speaking on podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s show, Ekta revealed that she had been considering a follow-up for some time but wanted to find a story that justified returning to the world of the 2011 film. She said she now believes she has a compelling narrative to bring to audiences.
“The Dirty Picture 2 is one of the biggest films I am working on. I am planning it 15 years after the original film. This time, I have a good story to tell the audience,” Ekta said.
Her comments have renewed interest in the possibility of a sequel to the film, which starred Vidya Balan in one of the most talked-about performances of her career.
Ekta Kapoor Explains Why She Wants to Make The Dirty Picture 2
Reflecting on the original film, Ekta discussed its portrayal of sexuality and society’s response to women who express themselves openly. The 2011 drama drew inspiration from the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha and explored the opportunities, challenges and personal struggles associated with her life in the entertainment industry.
Ekta said she never viewed the character simply as a victim. Instead, she saw the story as one about a woman who embraced her sexuality despite facing social judgement.
“The first part was about Silk Smitha. Society criticised her for expressing her sexuality openly. But sexuality is a personal choice. I never looked at her as a victim. I believed she celebrated her sexuality, and the film went on to become a tremendous success,” she said.
According to Ekta, the proposed sequel will also centre on an individual’s life story. However, she has not disclosed whose life will inspire the new narrative.
That mystery leaves the central premise of The Dirty Picture 2 open for now. It is also unclear whether the sequel will feature a direct continuation of the original film’s story or explore a different character and setting.
Will Vidya Balan Return for The Dirty Picture 2?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the proposed sequel is whether Vidya Balan will reprise her role. The actor headlined the original film, delivering a performance that earned widespread recognition and the National Film Award for Best Actress.
However, Ekta’s comments, as provided in the interview account, do not confirm Vidya’s involvement in the new project. No lead actor, supporting cast or other casting details have been announced in the supplied information.
The identity of the person whose life will form the basis of the sequel also remains undisclosed. Until further details emerge from the makers, speculation about the cast and storyline should be treated as unconfirmed.
For now, Ekta’s remarks indicate that the project is being developed around a story she considers worth telling, rather than confirming a completed screenplay or a production schedule.
A Look Back at The Dirty Picture
Released in December 2011, The Dirty Picture featured Vidya Balan alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor. Directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ekta Kapoor’s production banner, the film drew inspiration from the life of Silk Smitha, a prominent performer in South Indian cinema.
The drama explored the rise of its central character in the film industry, her public image and the complicated relationship between fame, sexuality and social acceptance.
Vidya’s performance became a defining moment in her career. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the film, while the project itself became widely discussed for its subject matter and portrayal of a woman navigating a male-dominated entertainment industry.
Smitha appeared in numerous South Indian films during her career and became known for her screen presence. She died in Chennai in 1996 at the age of 35.
Vidya Balan Once Called Playing Silk Smitha Her Biggest Reward
In 2012, Vidya reflected on the experience of making The Dirty Picture and the memories she associated with the film.
“All I knew was that we were trying to make a good film. Everything else was beyond our control. We have beautiful, unforgettable memories associated with this film. For me, the opportunity to play Silk was the biggest reward,” she said.
Her remarks captured the importance of the role in her career, regardless of the film’s eventual reception and awards recognition.
With Ekta Kapoor now considering a sequel, the next chapter of The Dirty Picture could bring another real-life-inspired story to the screen. For now, the producer has shared only the broad direction of the project, leaving the subject, cast and release timeline under wraps.
More details about The Dirty Picture 2 are awaited.
