The Blame Ending Explained: Who Killed Sophie Madsen and What Really Happened?

ITV1 thriller The Blame saves one of its biggest revelations for the final stretch, overturning what initially appears to be a straightforward murder solution and exposing a much deeper culture of corruption within Wakestead police.

DI Emma Crane, played by Michelle Keegan, spends the six-part thriller investigating the death of Sophie Madsen, only to discover that the case is connected to police misconduct, a serial sexual predator and a colleague willing to protect his career at another person’s expense.

The apparent killer is eventually identified, but the final scenes introduce another unresolved problem that could have serious consequences for Emma herself.

So, who killed Sophie, what happened to Neil Shergill, and what does the photograph found at the end mean?

Who Initially Appeared to Be Sophie’s Killer?

For much of the finale, technology specialist Neil Shergill, played by Nigel Boyle, appears to be responsible for Sophie’s death.

Emma discovers that Neil had been using his access to a messaging group to target women who had approached police for help. Instead of assisting them, he drugged and sexually assaulted some of them.

Neil had also exploited the fact that complaints against him had not been properly pursued by officers at Wakestead police station.

Emma eventually confronts Neil at his home after seeking his assistance, but the situation quickly becomes dangerous.

How Did Emma Escape Neil?

Emma’s own investigation nearly ends with her becoming another victim.

After her drink is spiked, Emma becomes increasingly incapacitated and struggles to get herself to safety. Neil tells her ominously to “go to sleep” as she loses consciousness.

Just before Emma is completely overcome, however, DI Tom Radley, played by Douglas Booth, arrives at the house.

Tom confronts Neil and eventually overpowers him. Neil dies during the confrontation, with the force used by Tom subsequently judged to have been appropriate.

Emma wakes up in hospital and initially believes the immediate threat has been dealt with.

But her investigation is far from over.

Did Neil Shergill Kill Sophie Madsen?

At first, the evidence appears to point directly toward Neil.

Flashbacks reveal that Sophie had gone to Neil’s home believing he could help her report misconduct by police officers. Instead, she discovered that Neil intended to harm her.

Sophie attempted to escape by running upstairs and trying to get out through a bedroom window.

The sequence initially leaves viewers with the impression that Neil caught her and that she did not survive the attempted escape.

The finale, however, reveals that this was not what happened.

The Clue That Made Emma Suspect Tom

After Emma survives her encounter with Neil, memories of the events surrounding Tom’s arrival at Neil’s house begin to trouble her.

She remembers Tom searching through drawers while making an urgent call for backup.

At the same time, Tom’s former police partner, Kapil Manek, played by Vikash Bhai, is arrested after being accused of planting a phone at Tom’s property.

Emma begins asking why Kapil would have done such a thing.

Her conversation with Kapil reveals a troubling history involving Tom.

Kapil describes Tom as an ambitious officer who failed to support him when he was subjected to workplace bullying. Tom’s own career was already progressing slowly, and Kapil was subsequently blamed for revealing the identity of a confidential informant.

Emma learns that the situation had been manipulated by Neil.

Tom had persuaded Neil to alter the paperwork, allowing Tom to protect his own career while Kapil was forced to resign.

That discovery changes the way Emma sees her colleague.

Emma Finds a Crucial DNA Clue

Emma decides to have Tom’s suit from the day Sophie was murdered examined again for DNA.

Her reasoning is personal as well as forensic. Given how close she and Tom were, Emma expected traces of her own DNA to be present on his clothing.

But her DNA isn’t there.

Emma realizes that Tom must have replaced the suit.

That raises an obvious question: why would Tom need to get rid of the clothes he was wearing on the day Sophie died?

Emma eventually reaches a devastating conclusion.

She believes Tom had been in the woods with Sophie.

Tom Reveals What Really Happened to Sophie

When Emma confronts Tom, the truth finally emerges.

Tom had already suspected that Neil was responsible for sexually assaulting women. He had even worked out that Neil was responsible for the rape of Marissa Andrei.

But instead of exposing Neil, Tom chose to protect his own career.

Tom convinced himself that Neil’s rape of Marissa was an isolated incident and allowed Neil to remain free.

His decision became part of a corrupt arrangement between the two men. Neil subsequently helped Tom by manipulating the situation surrounding Kapil, effectively repaying Tom for looking the other way.

Tom’s decision ultimately put more women in danger.

Tom, Not Neil, Killed Sophie

The biggest revelation is that Neil did not kill Sophie.

Sophie escaped Neil’s house and discovered the photographs Neil had kept as trophies.

She later met Tom in the woods and showed him the photographs. Sophie intended to identify Neil and expose what he had done.

But Tom immediately understood the danger.

Because he had known about Neil’s behavior and had deliberately failed to act, Sophie’s evidence could also expose Tom’s own involvement and negligence.

Instead of protecting Sophie, Tom attempted to undermine her credibility.

He questioned her account and blamed her for her interaction with her skating coach, effectively trying to make her doubt the validity of her own accusation.

When Sophie attempted to run away, she fell and struck her head against a fallen log.

She appeared to be unconscious.

Tom caught up with her and discovered that she was still alive.

He then struck Sophie with a rock, killing her.

That makes Tom Radley the person responsible for Sophie’s death, rather than Neil.

Why Did Tom Search Neil’s House?

Emma eventually understands another piece of the puzzle.

When Tom arrived at Neil’s house after Emma had been attacked, he appeared to be searching through drawers.

Initially, his actions could be interpreted as part of the effort to find evidence against Neil.

But Emma realizes that Tom was actually looking for phone records that could have connected him to Sophie and the events surrounding her death.

The revelation explains why Tom was so desperate to control the evidence.

Emma Arrests Tom

Emotionally devastated by what she has uncovered, Emma makes the decision to arrest Tom.

She calls for support over her radio, apparently bringing the Sophie Madsen investigation to its conclusion.

After everything Emma has discovered about Neil, Tom and the wider culture within the police force, it appears that the case has finally reached its resolution.

But The Blame has one final twist.

What Does the Photograph Found by Lewis Mean?

The closing moments shift attention to DC Lewis Brimah, played by Nathan Mensah.

Lewis is seen collecting Emma’s clothing, which had been used in the investigation to compare DNA evidence connected to Tom’s suit.

He then discovers something hidden in one of Emma’s jacket pockets.

It is a copy of one of Neil’s so-called trophy photographs.

The discovery is significant because Emma had previously hidden the photograph after Tom persuaded her not to speak out about an earlier investigation.

Why Did Emma Hide the Photograph?

Earlier in the story, Emma had been involved in a case where incriminating evidence was planted in order to secure the conviction of a suspected rapist.

The wrong man was ultimately convicted.

The person actually responsible was Neil.

Emma had concealed the photograph partly because she believed the justice system was failing victims and that bending the rules was necessary to achieve what she considered justice.

However, she had told Lewis that she did not know about any additional photographs.

The image found in her jacket therefore creates a new problem.

Lewis now has evidence that could contradict Emma’s account.

What Does the Ending Mean for Emma?

The finale deliberately leaves Emma’s future uncertain.

Tom has been exposed for protecting Neil and ultimately killing Sophie, but Emma has also crossed ethical and legal boundaries during her attempts to deal with a deeply compromised system.

Lewis’s discovery suggests that the Sophie investigation may not be the end of the consequences.

The question now is whether Lewis will act on the photograph and investigate Emma’s role in the earlier case.

If he does, Emma could find herself under scrutiny despite being the officer who ultimately uncovered Tom’s crime.

The Blame Ending Explained

The finale ultimately presents a chain of corruption rather than a single isolated villain.

Neil Shergill is responsible for sexually assaulting women and exploiting his position to target victims who sought police assistance. Tom Radley knows enough about Neil’s behavior to intervene but instead protects his own career. When Sophie threatens to expose both Neil and the wider cover-up, Tom kills her.

Emma eventually uncovers the truth and arrests Tom, but the final photograph shows that she has her own secrets.

That unresolved final beat reinforces one of the central ideas of The Blame: a dysfunctional system can corrupt people at different levels, including those who initially believe they are bending the rules for the right reasons.

Whether Lewis exposes Emma’s actions is left deliberately unresolved.
