Taapsee Pannu Recalls Being Replaced Because Hero’s Wife ‘Didn’t Like’ Her: ‘The Worst Reason’

Taapsee Pannu has opened up about some of the difficult experiences she has faced while navigating the Hindi film industry, including instances when she was removed from projects without being given a clear explanation.

In a recent conversation with Nayandeep Rakshit, the actor recalled being replaced in a film at the insistence of the male lead. She also described another incident as the “worst reason” she had ever been given for losing a role — being told that the hero’s wife did not like her.

Taapsee did not identify either the actor or his wife.

Speaking about one of her experiences, Taapsee said she was informed that the film’s hero no longer wanted her in the project. According to the actor, she was not given a specific explanation for the decision.

“I have been told that I was replaced by the hero of the film. God knows the reason. I keep imagining the reasons. I can imagine the insecurity; I can imagine that he wanted someone else whom he was closer to.”

Taapsee said she could think of several possible explanations herself, but stressed that she was never provided with a definitive reason.

She added:

“I can imagine various reasons, but I wasn’t given any solid reason. I was just told that he didn’t want me in the film because I kept asking the reason for my removal.”

Her comments highlight the uncertainty actors can experience when casting decisions change without an explanation being offered to them.

‘The Worst Reason’ Taapsee Was Given

Taapsee then recalled another incident that stood out to her because of the reason she was given for being replaced.

“The worst reason given to me when I was replaced was, ‘The hero’s wife doesn’t like you.’ I don’t know why she didn’t like me.”

The actor did not reveal the identity of the hero or his wife, and she did not provide additional details about the film.

As a result, the incident remains Taapsee’s account of an experience from her career rather than an allegation that can be independently attributed to a named individual.

Taapsee Pannu Says She Is Turning Down Some Roles

Taapsee has also recently spoken about becoming more selective about the projects she accepts.

According to the actor, she has started declining certain roles because she does not want to be repeatedly associated with the same kind of character or storytelling format.

She explained that the industry can sometimes rely on familiar casting patterns, with certain actresses repeatedly being considered for glamorous roles and others being associated with issue-driven or performance-oriented films.

“Everybody is going into their comfort zone and using tried-and-tested methods. For instance, for glamorous roles, they (industry) have a set of five actresses they can cast, and for hard-hitting, issue-based films, they have another set of five actresses to cast.”

Taapsee said this approach has influenced some of her recent decisions.

“I’ve actually started turning down films for this reason, telling makers that the audience will easily guess the ending.”

She added that she has even told filmmakers not to cast her when she believes her involvement could make a film’s outcome too predictable.

“Don’t cast me in this; it’s bad for your film. I’ve gone and ‘de-sold’ myself to a few films.”
