Taapsee Pannu Questions Casting Choices: ‘Why Take the Same Faces for the Same Roles?’

Taapsee Pannu has raised questions about repetitive casting trends in the film industry, suggesting that directors often rely on familiar faces for similar types of roles instead of exploring fresh talent.

Her latest film Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha, recently released in theatres and has received appreciation for its subject and performances, though its box office performance has been moderate.

On Breaking the Lead Actor Image

In a conversation with Galatta Plus, Taapsee spoke about how she often tells filmmakers that she is open to roles beyond being the central protagonist.

She explained that many industry professionals tend to associate actors with specific character types, making it difficult to step outside established perceptions.

“It is difficult — not for me, but for people to imagine. We are comfortable with predefined roles. Nobody wants to think out of the box,” she said.

She emphasised that she is willing to take on films where she is not necessarily the lead or where the story does not revolve around her character.

Challenging Repetitive Casting Trends

Taapsee questioned why directors repeatedly choose the same actors for similar roles.

“Why would you want to take the same faces for the same roles? It is unfair to them and unfair to actors like me who want to experiment,” she remarked.

According to her, if filmmakers continue casting actors in predictable character arcs, the performances will also remain within a familiar range.

She believes fresh casting choices bring new interpretations and push actors to explore different dimensions of their craft.

A Desire for Versatile Roles

The actress added that when she approaches directors, she makes it clear she is comfortable doing lighter roles as well.

“It is not necessary that if I am part of a film, it has to be issue-driven or intense. I would like to explore different tones,” she explained.

She concluded that if given the opportunity to experiment, she would contribute something new rather than repeating established patterns.
