Sreeleela faces social media backlash over comments about periods and menstrual pain

Sreeleela has faced criticism on social media after remarks she made about working during menstruation sparked a wider conversation about period pain, women’s health and the different ways people experience menstrual symptoms.

The actor, who recently completed her medical degree, made the comments while speaking at a success event for Ustaad Bhagat Singh. Her statement about pushing beyond physiological barriers drew mixed reactions online, with several users arguing that an individual’s experience of menstruation cannot be applied universally.

What Sreeleela Said About Periods

During the event, Sreeleela spoke about continuing to work despite physical challenges and referred to her own experience of shooting songs while she was on her period.

She said:

“All of my songs, I can say, most of them at least have been appreciated. I have shot while I have been on my period, so that is not an excuse anywhere. When we want things in power, when we say we want things equally. I feel we have to push beyond physiological barriers. So psychological, physiological, all of this is not an excuse.”

Her comments appeared to be connected to a broader point about women seeking equality and being willing to work through challenges.

However, the remarks quickly became controversial online.

Why Her Comments Sparked Criticism

Many social-media users argued that menstrual symptoms can differ substantially from one person to another.

Some people experience little or no significant disruption during their periods, while others can experience debilitating cramps, fatigue, headaches, nausea or other symptoms.

One user responding to the comments wrote:

“It’s different for everyone, just cause you can jump around doesn’t mean someone else can too.”

Another user described experiencing severe period pain and questioned the idea of treating menstruation-related limitations as an excuse.

A third commenter criticised the remarks for potentially minimising the experiences of women who experience severe menstrual symptoms.

The reactions reflect a broader debate over whether conversations about resilience can unintentionally dismiss legitimate health concerns.

Period Pain Is Not the Same for Everyone

Menstrual symptoms exist on a wide spectrum.

Some people are able to continue working, exercising and performing physically demanding activities during their periods without major difficulty. Others experience symptoms that can substantially interfere with everyday life.

Period pain, medically known as dysmenorrhoea, can range from mild cramping to severe pain.

Menstrual symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal or pelvic cramps
  • Lower-back pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhoea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Mood changes

The intensity of these symptoms can vary between individuals and may also change from one menstrual cycle to another.

Severe Period Pain Should Not Be Dismissed

While some menstrual discomfort is common, severe or persistent pain can sometimes be associated with underlying conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis or uterine fibroids.

That does not mean that every person with painful periods has an underlying medical condition. However, symptoms that consistently interfere with work, education, exercise or daily activities may warrant medical evaluation.

For that reason, one person’s ability to work through menstruation should not automatically become a standard against which someone else’s physical experience is judged.

Sreeleela’s Medical Background Adds Another Dimension

Sreeleela’s comments received additional attention because she has recently completed her medical education at DY Patil University in Mumbai, according to the information surrounding the event.

That background led some social-media users to hold her remarks to a higher standard and question whether her comments sufficiently acknowledged the range of menstrual experiences.

However, a person’s professional or academic background does not necessarily mean that every public statement they make represents medical guidance.

Sreeleela’s comments should therefore be understood as her remarks about her own experience and views rather than as a general medical recommendation.

Has Sreeleela Responded to the Backlash?

At the time of publication, Sreeleela had not publicly issued a clarification or response to the social-media criticism, based on the information available for this report.

The online discussion nevertheless continued, with users debating the relationship between workplace expectations, gender equality and menstrual health.

Sreeleela’s Acting Career

Sreeleela began her acting career with the 2019 film Kiss.

She subsequently appeared in South Indian films and gained wider recognition among mainstream audiences.

Her visibility increased further with Pushpa 2: The Rule, where she featured alongside Allu Arjun in the dance number Kissik.

The song became one of the prominent musical moments associated with the film and introduced Sreeleela to an even wider audience.

Upcoming Projects

Sreeleela is set to appear alongside Kartik Aaryan in filmmaker Anurag Basu’s upcoming musical romance.

She is also attached to a project opposite Dhanush, tentatively referred to as D55, with Rajkumar Periasamy as director.

With multiple projects ahead, the actor continues to build her career across the Indian film industry.

The Larger Conversation Around Menstrual Health

The controversy surrounding Sreeleela’s remarks has ultimately moved beyond one celebrity statement.

It has highlighted an important distinction: being able to work through a period is an individual experience, not a universal measure of how menstruation should affect everyone.

Women can advocate for equal professional opportunities while also acknowledging legitimate differences in physical health.

A more inclusive conversation around menstruation requires recognising both realities—some people may experience minimal symptoms, while others may face pain severe enough to affect their ability to function normally.
