A social media creator has sparked a conversation about salary privacy, advising employees to be more selective about who they share their exact income with. She also stressed that discussing compensation can be valuable when done with trusted people for career and pay-related decisions.

Talking about money at work can be uncomfortable, but salary conversations can also help employees understand whether their compensation is broadly in line with the market.

However, Instagram creator Simran Maurya has urged people to think carefully before sharing their exact salary with friends, relatives or colleagues.

In a video shared on Instagram, Maurya argued that the issue is not salary discussions themselves but making personal income information available to people who may not need to know it.

Her comments have prompted a wider conversation about salary privacy, workplace comparisons and financial expectations.

‘The Moment People Know Your Salary’

Maurya said people are often most likely to reveal their income when they start their first job or receive their first salary.

The excitement of earning for the first time can make people more willing to tell friends, cousins and relatives exactly how much they make.

According to her, that information can eventually become difficult to control once several people know the figure.

She said people may begin making assumptions about what someone should be able to afford or how much money they ought to have saved.

“The problem is not with telling your salary. The problem is sharing the exact figure of your salary with just anyone without thinking it through.”

Maurya suggested that income can be personal information, and employees should decide who genuinely needs access to those details.

How Salary Comparisons Can Create Pressure

One of the concerns Maurya highlighted was the comparison that can follow salary disclosure.

For example, someone who knows another person’s income might assume they can easily afford a particular purchase or question why they have not accumulated more savings.

Maurya said such comments can sometimes leave the person earning the salary questioning their own financial progress.

She raised questions such as whether someone is being underpaid, whether their income is too low and whether they are progressing financially at the expected pace.

The point she was making was less about hiding income and more about controlling who has access to personal financial information.

Why She Advises Caution With Workplace Colleagues

Maurya also urged employees to be thoughtful when discussing their salaries with colleagues.

She argued that information shared casually with a co-worker may later appear in a different conversation or context.

“At the workplace, please be a bit more careful, because the information you are casually sharing with a colleague today, who knows in which conversation or context it might be used against you tomorrow.”

Her comments reflect a common workplace consideration: salary information can have consequences beyond the initial conversation, particularly in environments where compensation differs significantly between employees.

At the same time, salary transparency can also serve legitimate purposes, including identifying pay disparities and preparing for compensation negotiations.

Maurya Says Salary Discussions Are Still Important

Importantly, Maurya did not argue that employees should never discuss their pay.

In fact, she said salary conversations can be useful when someone is negotiating compensation, researching market rates or preparing to change jobs.

“If we don’t discuss compensation at all, how will we ever know whether we are overpaid or underpaid?”

She encouraged people to speak with individuals they trust and, where appropriate, others working in the same industry.

The distinction she made was between purposeful salary discussions and casually sharing an exact salary with everyone in one’s personal or professional circle.

Her advice was essentially to treat salary information as something that can be shared strategically rather than automatically.

Social Media Users Support the Idea of Salary Privacy

Maurya’s Instagram post received comments from users who agreed that personal income does not necessarily need to become public information.

One user wrote, “Salary is personal for a reason.”

Another commented, “Not everyone needs to know your numbers.”

Others said oversharing income could create unnecessary pressure, while another user summarised the discussion with the observation: “Discuss salary, but with the right people.”

The reactions suggest that many people see a distinction between discussing compensation for professional purposes and revealing their exact earnings without considering the audience.

Should You Share Your Salary?

There is no single approach that works for every workplace or relationship.

Talking about compensation with trusted colleagues or industry peers can help employees understand prevailing pay levels, identify possible disparities and negotiate more effectively. On the other hand, sharing exact income figures with friends or relatives may sometimes invite comparisons or expectations that a person would rather avoid.

Maurya’s central message was therefore not to stop salary conversations altogether, but to be deliberate about who receives the information and why.

For employees, the decision can depend on their workplace culture, personal comfort, the purpose of the conversation and the level of trust involved.
