Sadie Sink is stepping into one of Marvel Comics’ most recognisable mutant roles.

The Stranger Things star is set to play Jean Grey as Marvel Studios develops its next chapter of X-Men stories, giving the actor an opportunity to put her own interpretation on a character who has already been portrayed in previous screen adaptations.

For Sink, however, the role initially came with a surprising challenge: she was not particularly familiar with Jean Grey or the wider X-Men mythology before being approached for the part.

Sadie Sink admits she initially knew little about Jean Grey

In an interview with Variety, Sink opened up about the experience of joining the Marvel universe.

“Honestly, I knew nothing about her,” she said when discussing Jean Grey.

Although online speculation about her potential casting had circulated for some time, Sink said she had not watched the previous X-Men films before taking on the role.

Her interest changed after speaking with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who helped explain the significance of the character and her place within Marvel’s plans.

Sink recalled reaching the point where accepting the role felt like an obvious decision.

“I was like, ‘Oh yeah, this is a no-brainer!’” she said.

Jean Grey is more complicated than a typical superhero

Sink also suggested that her version of Jean Grey will not be defined simply by superhero abilities.

For the actor, understanding the character’s emotional history is an important part of preparing for the role.

“She’s very flawed,” Sink said, describing Jean as someone audiences encounter at an unusual point in her life.

Sink also offered a more nuanced description of the character’s relationship with harm and vulnerability.

“You’re meeting her at a strange point, because I don’t think she is someone who wants to harm, but she herself has been harmed,” she explained.

That perspective appears to be informing the actor’s approach to Jean.

Rather than treating the character solely as a powerful mutant, Sink is interested in exploring the experiences and relationships that have shaped her.

Sink wants to build Jean’s backstory

One element Sink highlighted was the importance of developing a detailed history for Jean before portraying her on screen.

The actor has spoken about exploring the character’s family relationships, including her dynamic with her sister.

That preparation could be particularly important for a character whose comic-book history has frequently involved emotional conflict, extraordinary powers and complicated relationships with other mutants.

Jean Grey is one of the central figures in Marvel’s X-Men mythology and is traditionally associated with telepathy and telekinesis.

Her story has also been closely connected to the powerful Phoenix Force in the comics, although Marvel Studios has not revealed how much of that mythology will be incorporated into its new screen version.

Steve Lacy accidentally revealed the secret

Sink also recalled an amusing moment involving musician Steve Lacy, who inadvertently revealed her Marvel character before the project’s official secrecy could be maintained.

The actor said the unexpected disclosure was both surprising and, in some ways, liberating.

“I was like, ‘Ah!’ He kind of set me free in a lot of ways. And I’m such a big fan of his,” Sink said.

Marvel projects are well known for their tightly controlled announcements and spoiler-sensitive marketing, making accidental revelations particularly noticeable among fans.

In Sink’s case, however, the unexpected disclosure meant she no longer had to navigate the same level of secrecy surrounding her character.

From ‘Stranger Things’ to Marvel

Sink’s transition into the superhero genre represents another major step in a career that began at a young age.

She became internationally recognised through Stranger Things, where her performance as Max Mayfield established her as one of the show’s most prominent young actors.

Her work outside the Netflix series has also included films such as The Whale, which earned significant critical attention, as well as other film and television projects.

The move into Marvel now gives Sink the opportunity to lead a major franchise character while continuing to expand beyond the role that made her famous.

The Stranger Things creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have also been among the people who supported Sink during her transition into new stages of her career.

Marvel’s new generation of X-Men

Sink’s casting comes as Marvel Studios prepares to establish a new generation of mutants within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The studio has been gradually introducing mutant-related elements into the MCU while preparing for a larger X-Men story following the multiverse-focused era.

The new mutant lineup is expected to feature a fresh group of actors rather than simply recreating the previous Fox-era team.

That makes Sink’s Jean Grey an important part of Marvel’s attempt to introduce familiar characters to a new generation of audiences.

Other casting announcements have also generated considerable interest, including Samara Weaving as Emma Frost.

The new interpretations are expected to draw from decades of X-Men comic-book material while giving Marvel Studios room to develop its own continuity.

What remains unknown about Jean Grey

Despite Sink’s comments, Marvel is keeping many details surrounding its new X-Men story under wraps.

The studio has not publicly revealed the full extent of Jean Grey’s role, her complete character arc or how her relationship with other mutants will develop.

That leaves considerable room for speculation, particularly because Jean has one of the richest histories in X-Men comics.

For now, Sink appears focused on the character rather than simply reproducing earlier performances.

Her comments suggest that audiences can expect a Jean Grey shaped by personal history, vulnerability and emotional complexity—not just mutant powers.

Sadie Sink’s next Marvel chapter

Taking on Jean Grey gives Sink one of the biggest franchise roles of her career and places her at the centre of Marvel Studios’ plans for its next mutant era.

After becoming a household name through Stranger Things, the actor is now preparing to tackle a character with decades of comic-book history.

Exactly how Marvel will reinvent Jean Grey remains one of the major questions surrounding the studio’s X-Men plans.

But Sink’s approach is already clear: she wants to understand who Jean is, what happened to her and why those experiences shaped the person audiences will eventually meet.
