Rupali Ganguly Joins Reconstituted CBFC Board Alongside Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi and Suniel Shetty

Anupamaa actor Rupali Ganguly has taken on a new role within India’s film certification system after being appointed as one of the 18 members of the newly reconstituted Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The new board was announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on September 16 and will have a three-year tenure. The reconstitution marks the first major reshuffle of the CBFC board since 2017, bringing together personalities from cinema and the wider creative industry.

Rupali Ganguly Joins 18-Member CBFC Panel

Rupali is part of a panel that includes several prominent names from Indian cinema and entertainment. The newly constituted board features Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi, Suniel Shetty, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Pallavi Joshi, Priyadarshan and Ricky Kej, among others.

The appointments bring together professionals from different areas of the creative sector, including acting, filmmaking, music and theatre.

For Rupali, the appointment adds a new dimension to a career largely associated with Indian television. Her inclusion also gives her a formal role within an institution responsible for the certification of films intended for public exhibition.

What Does the CBFC Do?

The Central Board of Film Certification is the statutory body responsible for certifying films for public exhibition in India.

Its functions operate under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, along with the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024 and other applicable regulations.

The CBFC evaluates films submitted for certification and can grant certification subject to the applicable provisions and guidelines. The board’s work therefore plays an important part in determining whether a film can be publicly exhibited in India and under what certification category.

Rupali’s appointment does not mean that she individually decides which films receive clearance. As a member of the board, her role is part of the collective institutional process.

A New Role Beyond Television

Rupali Ganguly has spent much of her career in television, appearing in several popular Hindi shows before becoming closely identified with Anupamaa.

Her latest appointment expands her involvement in the entertainment industry beyond acting and into an institutional role connected to film certification.
