Australia: A young Australian comedian has sparked a broader discussion about roadside assistance safety after describing a distressing experience during a late-night vehicle breakdown in a rural town.

Laura Johnston, 27, said she felt vulnerable and fearful after an unexpected encounter while waiting for roadside assistance during a trip to a performance earlier this year. Her story has since resonated with many Australians, prompting calls for improved verification procedures for roadside assistance providers.

Vehicle Breakdown Leads to Alarming Encounter

According to Johnston, her vehicle broke down in a small country town while she was traveling to a comedy gig in February.

After contacting a roadside assistance company, she was reportedly informed that help would take approximately two hours to arrive.

However, Johnston said a vehicle arrived roughly 20 minutes later, creating confusion and concern.

She recalled seeing a small car approach quickly before stopping beside her vehicle. The driver then approached and allegedly attempted to get her attention.

Safety Concerns Prompted Caution

Because she was alone and waiting at night, Johnston said she wanted confirmation that the individual was genuinely connected to the roadside assistance provider before opening her door.

She claimed the man became frustrated when she requested identification and then left the scene.

The incident left Johnston uncertain about whether the person was an official contractor or an unrelated individual who had noticed her stranded vehicle.

Company Later Confirmed Contractor’s Identity

Johnston later contacted the roadside assistance provider again and said she was informed that the individual was, in fact, a contractor working on behalf of the company.

According to her account, she was also told that contractors in some regional areas may not be required to wear uniforms or carry visible identification.

The experience raised concerns for Johnston about how stranded motorists can verify the identity of people arriving to assist them.

Call for Verification System

Following the incident, Johnston launched a petition advocating for stronger safety measures within the roadside assistance industry.

Among her proposed solutions is a verification system similar to those used by delivery and ride-sharing services.

Under such a system:

  • Customers would receive a unique verification code.
  • Contractors would receive a matching code.
  • Both parties would confirm the code before any interaction begins.

Johnston argues that such a process could provide additional reassurance for motorists, particularly those stranded alone at night or in remote locations.

Public Support Grows Online

Many Australians expressed support for the proposal after Johnston shared her experience publicly.

Supporters argue that verification procedures could:

  • Improve customer confidence.
  • Reduce the risk of impersonation.
  • Enhance safety for vulnerable motorists.
  • Provide greater transparency during emergency callouts.

Several commenters noted that many modern service platforms already utilize identity verification tools and questioned why similar measures are not universally standard in roadside assistance services.

Roadside Safety Remains a Key Concern

Safety experts frequently advise motorists who experience breakdowns to:

  • Stay inside their locked vehicle if they feel unsafe.
  • Call emergency services if they believe they are in immediate danger.
  • Verify service provider details whenever possible.
  • Share their location with family or friends.
  • Keep mobile phones charged during travel.

Industry observers note that technological solutions such as digital verification, contractor tracking, and customer authentication systems could become increasingly common as roadside assistance providers seek to improve user safety.

A Conversation Beyond One Incident

While the circumstances of Johnston’s experience remain specific to her situation, the debate it has generated highlights a broader issue facing motorists: how to balance rapid roadside support with personal safety.

As discussions continue, her call for stronger verification measures is prompting renewed attention on industry standards and the evolving expectations of consumers in an increasingly connected world.
