Ritabhari Chakraborty underwent a significant physical transformation for Aritra Mukherjee’s Bengali film Fatafati, in which she plays a woman associated with plus-size fashion. The actor said the demanding transformation felt worthwhile because the film addresses body positivity and aims to challenge conventional ideas about appearance.

Ritabhari Chakraborty has often taken on characters that require her to step outside her comfort zone. But her role in Fatafati demanded something particularly challenging: a substantial physical transformation to portray a plus-size woman navigating the fashion world.

Directed by Aritra Mukherjee, Fatafati also stars Abir Chatterjee and features Swastika Dutta in a pivotal role. The Bengali film explores body image, social judgement and the idea of accepting people beyond conventional standards of beauty.

Speaking about the project ahead of its theatrical release, Chakraborty said she was excited by the film’s subject and described the physical preparation as the most extreme transformation she had undertaken for a role at that point in her career.

Ritabhari Chakraborty Says Transformation Was Worth It

For Chakraborty, the physical change was not simply a requirement of the character. She viewed it as part of a larger conversation that the film could initiate around body positivity.

The actor explained that she had previously prepared extensively for other roles, but those preparations involved learning skills or changing her manner of speaking rather than putting a comparable physical demand on her body.

For Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti, she had learned aspects of portraying a priest, while her work in Sesh Theke Shuru involved preparing for a Bangladeshi accent.

With Fatafati, however, the preparation was substantially different.

She said the fact that the transformation was connected to a universal and relatable subject made the experience particularly meaningful for her.

What Is Fatafati About?

Fatafati is directed by Aritra Mukherjee and centres on the subject of body positivity.

Chakraborty plays a character connected to plus-size fashion, allowing the film to explore how people who do not fit conventional beauty standards can face judgement and discrimination.

Rather than treating appearance as merely a cosmetic issue, the story uses body image as a way to examine social attitudes and the pressure placed on people—particularly women—to conform to a particular physical ideal.

The actor hoped the film would encourage audiences to discuss these issues more openly.

‘I Really Think This Film Should Open the Conversation’

Chakraborty said she was happy to be part of a project that dealt with a subject she considered both universal and relevant.

According to the actor, making meaningful and artistic cinema with a team of creative collaborators gave her a sense of achievement.

She also reunited with members of the creative team behind Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti, which added another layer to her experience of working on the project.

For Chakraborty, the value of Fatafati extended beyond her own performance. She saw the film as an opportunity to start a larger conversation about how society perceives bodies and beauty.

Working With Abir Chatterjee and Swastika Dutta

Fatafati brought Chakraborty together with Abir Chatterjee, while Swastika Dutta also featured in an important role.

The combination of an ensemble cast and a socially relevant subject helped generate interest around the Bengali film ahead of its release.

For Chakraborty, however, the central attraction remained the story and its message.

The film’s focus on body positivity gave her physical transformation a clear narrative purpose rather than making it simply a visual alteration for the screen.

Ritabhari’s Other Acting Transformations

The actor has previously undertaken different forms of preparation for her film roles.

While discussing Fatafati, she recalled the preparation involved in earlier projects, including Brahma Janen Gopon Kommoti and Sesh Theke Shuru.

Her comments highlight the different demands placed on actors when preparing for characters. Sometimes the transformation involves learning a profession or skill, while other roles require changes to speech, physicality or appearance.

In Fatafati, Chakraborty’s preparation was particularly visible because of the physical transformation required for the character.

Beyond the Physical Transformation

The larger significance of Fatafati lies in its attempt to address the way people are judged based on their bodies.

Body positivity has become an increasingly visible topic in popular culture, particularly as social media and entertainment continue to influence perceptions of beauty.

Films dealing with these themes can contribute to conversations about self-acceptance and the social pressure surrounding physical appearance.

Chakraborty’s involvement also placed the subject at the centre of a mainstream Bengali film, potentially allowing the discussion to reach audiences beyond social-media conversations.

Ritabhari Chakraborty Also Spoke About Her Calendar Launch

Around the same period, Chakraborty also launched her annual calendar in collaboration with a beauty brand.

She revealed that it was her fifth year working with the brand and that the calendar had been photographed in Phuket.

The actor described the launch event as intentionally intimate. Rather than organising a large-scale professional gathering, she wanted to spend time with people close to her and those she had known for years.

For Chakraborty, the occasion therefore became both a professional milestone and an opportunity to reconnect with people important to her.

When Was Fatafati Released?

Fatafati was scheduled for theatrical release on May 12, 2023.

The film’s subject, combined with Chakraborty’s physical transformation and the presence of popular Bengali actors, made it one of the notable releases surrounding that period in Bengali cinema.

Its focus on body positivity also gave it a subject that extended beyond conventional romantic or family drama narratives.

A Role With a Larger Message

For Ritabhari Chakraborty, Fatafati represented more than another demanding acting assignment.

The physical transformation required for the character was significant, but the actor believed it was justified by the larger message the film was attempting to communicate.

By putting body image and social judgement at the centre of its story, Fatafati sought to encourage audiences to reconsider narrow definitions of beauty.

Chakraborty’s hope was straightforward: that the film would not simply entertain viewers but also start a meaningful conversation about body positivity and acceptance.
