A new generation of performers is steadily finding its footing across Indian cinema and streaming. As filmmakers look for younger faces who can bring natural chemistry and relatability to contemporary stories, several emerging actors are beginning to attract attention through films, web series and high-profile collaborations.
The recently released young-adult romantic comedy Don’t Be Shy, which arrived on September 25, is one example of this changing landscape. Directed by Sreeti Mukerji and backed by Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt’s Eternal Sunshine Productions, the film follows young characters dealing with friendship, first love, self-discovery and the insecurities that often accompany college life.
At the centre is Shyamili “Shy” Das, a college student navigating romance and social expectations while keeping aspects of her modest background private.
Beyond Don’t Be Shy, performers such as Laapataa Ladies breakout Pratibha Ranta and former child actor Sara Arjun are also building increasingly visible careers. Here are eight young talents making their presence felt across Indian screen entertainment.
1. Ansh Duggal
Ansh Duggal plays Dhruv in Don’t Be Shy, bringing an easygoing presence to the film’s young ensemble.
Before moving further into feature films, Duggal appeared in modelling campaigns and music videos, including Dhvani Bhanushali’s Nayan. He was also part of the romantic drama Nakhrewaalii.
His work in Don’t Be Shy gives him another opportunity to connect with audiences through a contemporary young-adult story.
2. Sara Arjun
Sara Arjun has one of the more distinctive trajectories among performers of her generation, having moved from child acting into more mature screen roles.
She gained widespread recognition for playing young Nandini in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan. She later became part of larger productions, including Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar alongside Ranveer Singh.
Years of experience in front of the camera have given Arjun a foundation that is relatively uncommon for an actor still at the early stage of her adult career.
3. Aarushi Bajaj
Aarushi Bajaj takes centre stage in Don’t Be Shy as Shyamili “Shy” Das.
Her character is caught between the excitement of college life and the fear of being judged because of her background. Through friendship and romance, Shy gradually confronts the insecurities that have shaped the way she presents herself to others.
Bajaj was previously seen in Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal Murders, and Don’t Be Shy gives her a more prominent opportunity to lead a young-adult story.
4. Bianca Arora
Bianca Arora plays Tara in Don’t Be Shy, one of the members of the film’s central group of friends.
She previously appeared in the series Power of Paanch. Her latest role places her within an ensemble built around friendship, relationships and the experiences of young adults.
As streaming and youth-focused cinema continue to create opportunities for newer performers, Arora is among the names beginning to build a broader screen presence.
5. Medha Rana
Medha Rana has been developing her acting portfolio through streaming projects and contemporary screen roles.
She has appeared in projects including London Files, adding to a growing filmography that reflects the increasingly fluid movement between theatrical cinema and digital entertainment.
For performers from the newer generation, streaming has become an important space to experiment with different characters and genres, and Rana’s work reflects that changing landscape.
6. Pratibha Ranta
Pratibha Ranta became one of the more closely watched young performers after her performances in Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi.
Her performances have drawn attention for their understated quality and emotional depth, particularly in characters that require a balance of vulnerability and strength.
With increasingly prominent projects adding to her profile, Ranta is emerging as a performer to watch in the evolving Hindi entertainment landscape.
7. Vanshika Dhir
Vanshika Dhir stepped into mainstream Hindi cinema with Kunal Kemmu’s action-comedy VIBE, which featured Preity Zinta and Sparsh Shrivastav.
The project marked an important move into a larger theatrical setting for the young actor and introduced her to a wider mainstream audience.
As newer performers continue to enter Hindi cinema through ensemble productions and genre films, Dhir represents another young face beginning to establish her place on the big screen.
8. Piyush Khati
Piyush Khati plays Mayank in Don’t Be Shy, completing the film’s central young ensemble.
He has previously appeared in streaming projects including Taj Mahal 1989 and Extraction. His experience across different screen formats has allowed him to take on characters in both drama and more contemporary, youth-oriented stories.
In Don’t Be Shy, Khati gets the opportunity to combine comic exchanges with quieter emotional moments, adding another dimension to the film’s coming-of-age narrative.
A New Generation Finding Its Own Space
The growing visibility of actors such as Ansh Duggal, Sara Arjun, Aarushi Bajaj, Bianca Arora, Medha Rana, Pratibha Ranta, Vanshika Dhir and Piyush Khati reflects the expanding opportunities available to younger performers.
Films and streaming platforms are increasingly creating space for actors who can portray contemporary characters without relying solely on established star power. While their careers are at different stages, each of these performers has already begun building a body of work that could shape their next phase in Indian cinema and streaming.
