Richa Chadha Wins Apology in Defamation Case, Says She Is ‘Elated’ by the Outcome

Actor Richa Chadha said she was “elated” after receiving an unconditional apology in connection with a defamation case she had filed over remarks made about her during allegations involving filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.

According to reports, the actor who had made the remarks tendered an unconditional apology before the Bombay High Court. The apology formed part of consent terms accepted by the court in the matter.

Chadha had initiated defamation proceedings after objecting to her name being linked to allegations made against Kashyap. Her legal action sought to challenge statements and social media content that she said were defamatory and damaging to her reputation.

Unconditional Apology and Withdrawal of Posts

As part of the settlement, the actor agreed to withdraw the disputed social media posts concerning Chadha. Richa Chadha’s team said the Bombay High Court had accepted the consent terms and recorded the unconditional apology and withdrawal of the allegedly defamatory content.

Chadha welcomed the outcome of the case and said she was pleased with the resolution.

The actor had also named film critic and commentator Kamaal R Khan and Telugu television channel ABN Andhrajyothy in her legal action, seeking damages of Rs 1.1 crore over content she alleged was defamatory.

Court Proceedings Involving Other Parties

During the hearing, Kamaal R Khan also agreed to withdraw the disputed material that was part of the proceedings. However, his counsel sought additional time to submit an affidavit before the court.

The court granted four weeks for the affidavit to be filed. An interim injunction was also passed in relation to ABN Andhrajyothy and another unidentified party, according to reports from the proceedings.

Background of the Case

The controversy began after allegations were made against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. The complainant accused Kashyap of rape in connection with an alleged incident from 2013.

She also made statements linking the names of other actors, including Richa Chadha, Huma Qureshi and Mahie Gill, to the matter. Chadha subsequently took legal action, stating that her name had been unnecessarily drawn into allegations unrelated to her.

Kashyap denied the allegations against him and described them as false. Reports at the time also said that the filmmaker presented material concerning his whereabouts during the period referred to in the allegations.

The resolution of the defamation case was a significant development for Chadha, who had maintained that she had been wrongly associated with allegations that did not concern her.

The actor expressed satisfaction with the outcome after the unconditional apology and the agreement to remove the disputed content from social media platforms.

The case also highlighted the legal consequences that can arise when individuals are named in public allegations and online statements without substantiated evidence or a direct connection to the matter.
