Regina Cassandra Says South Indian Identity Limited Bollywood Opportunities: “I Was Treated in a Derogatory Manner”

Actor Regina Cassandra has reflected on her experience working in the Hindi film industry, revealing that her regional background may have impacted the kind of roles she was offered. The 35-year-old performer, known for her extensive work in Tamil and Telugu cinema, shared that despite being fluent in Hindi, she faced limited opportunities in Mumbai.

Hindi Debut and Bollywood Journey

Regina made her Hindi film debut with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, co-starring Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Although the film marked her entry into Bollywood, she said the trajectory that followed was not as expansive as she had hoped.

Over the years, she has appeared in Hindi projects such as Jaat alongside Sunny Deol, and Kesari Chapter 2 with Akshay Kumar. However, Regina believes her identification as a “South Indian actress” influenced casting perceptions.

“I Was Perceived Differently”

In a recent interview, Regina explained that although she can read, write, and speak Hindi fluently—and has dubbed for her own roles—she was often categorised primarily as a regional actor. She suggested that such labelling may have shaped how industry insiders viewed her suitability for mainstream Hindi roles.

On Facing Bias and Gendered Assumptions

The actor also addressed experiences of being treated in what she described as a derogatory manner. Without naming individuals, she said that certain interactions made her feel undervalued. According to Regina, perceptions around regional identity and gender continue to influence casting dynamics in parts of the industry.

She clarified that not every experience was negative, but acknowledged that early setbacks created hesitation about pursuing long-term work in Mumbai.

Strong Presence Across Industries

Despite challenges in Bollywood, Regina has maintained a successful career in South Indian cinema with acclaimed films such as:

She has also featured in Hindi web series including Rocket Boys, Farzi, and Jaanbaaz Hindustan Ke, along with Tamil OTT titles like Fingertip and Anya’s Tutorial.
