Rani Chatterjee’s November 3 birthday offers an occasion to revisit a career that began with Sasura Bada Paisawala and expanded into television, streaming and reality entertainment.
Known professionally as Rani Chatterjee, the actor was born Sabiha Shaikh. Her debut opposite Manoj Tiwari in the 2004 release Sasura Bada Paisawala introduced her to Bhojpuri film audiences and established the screen name she continues to use.
How did she get the name Rani Chatterjee?
The story behind her professional name comes from Chatterjee’s own account of filming her debut.
In an interview with Navbharat Times, she recalled shooting at a Shiva temple in Gorakhpur when members of the media arrived. According to her account, the director asked her to use her character’s name, Rani, because he was concerned about a possible reaction to her religious identity during the temple shoot.
She credited producer Sudhakar Pandey with supplying the surname Chatterjee when speaking to the press. The name subsequently became her professional identity. This is her recollection of the incident, rather than evidence that a confrontation actually occurred.
The debut that launched her film career
Sasura Bada Paisawala remains a defining title in Chatterjee’s career. Its success helped establish her as a familiar presence in Bhojpuri cinema.
Her subsequent film credits include Devra Bada Satawela, Ganga Yamuna Saraswati, Nagin, Rani No. 786 and Lady Singham. Across these projects, she built a filmography spanning family drama, romance and action-oriented stories.
Rather than relying on a disputed total number of films, these credits provide a clearer picture of her sustained work across more than two decades.
Moving beyond Bhojpuri films
Chatterjee has also appeared in formats outside regional cinema. Her credits include the streaming series Mastram and the stunt-based reality programme Khatron Ke Khiladi 10.
In interviews about Khatron Ke Khiladi, she discussed facing unfamiliar challenges and overcoming fears during her participation. The appearance introduced viewers to her outside a scripted film role.
More recently, she has featured in coverage of Bhojpuri Bawaal, the entertainment programme available on JioHotstar and aired on Colors TV.
A career built across different screens
Chatterjee’s professional story extends beyond the unusual origin of her name. Her debut, continuing film work and appearances in streaming and television trace a career that has developed across changing entertainment platforms.
On her birthday, that progression offers a useful way to revisit her work: from a first film opposite Manoj Tiwari to an established place in Bhojpuri entertainment.
