Radhika Apte discusses the contradictions behind Rudra, her rivalry with Keerthy Suresh’s Bhavani and the Zeenat Aman references that helped shape her appearance.
Radhika Apte’s Rudra makes an impression through her style and confidence, but the actor says the character’s appeal lies beneath that striking exterior. In Akka, which is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2026, Rudra challenges an established order while carrying ambitions and emotional contradictions of her own.
Speaking about the role in comments published by Bollywood Hungama, Apte described a woman whose dramatic appearance conceals a more complicated personality. That contrast gave her something unfamiliar to explore as a performer.
Rudra challenges Bhavani’s authority
Written and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty, Akka takes place in the fictional South Indian city of Pernuru, where women hold power. YRF Entertainment places the story in the 1980s. Keerthy Suresh plays Bhavani, while Apte’s Rudra emerges as a challenge to the world Bhavani seeks to protect.
Their rivalry involves competing ideas about loyalty, family and what each woman believes she deserves. In Netflix’s announcement, Apte explained that Rudra refuses to let her circumstances determine who she can become. Her willingness to confront Pernuru’s hierarchy puts those convictions into conflict with Bhavani’s responsibilities.
For viewers, that sets up a central question: how far will each character go when protecting her own future threatens someone else’s?
Why Apte is drawn to morally complicated characters
In a PTI interview carried by NDTV, Apte said characters with conflicting motivations offer more to explore than straightforwardly virtuous roles. Bhavani’s determination to preserve her legacy does not automatically make every decision she takes admirable. Rudra, meanwhile, has a mission of her own.
Her comments suggest a useful way into the drama: follow what each woman wants, what she fears losing and how those pressures influence her choices. The rivalry promises tension because both characters have personal reasons to believe their actions are justified.
That is the premise being presented ahead of release; how convincingly the series develops it will depend on the finished episodes.
The Zeenat Aman influence behind Rudra’s look
Rudra’s appearance also reflects her background. Apte told PTI that Zeenat Aman’s screen looks helped inform the costume and hair discussions, particularly the fringe and hairstyle. Rudra’s Bombay origins made those references relevant to the character.
The distinction matters: the influence concerns Rudra’s visual presentation. Apte did not describe the character as a portrayal of Aman.
