Prosenjit Chatterjee Honoured With Padma Shri for Contribution to Indian Cinema

Veteran actor Prosenjit Chatterjee was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award during the Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The honour was presented by President Droupadi Murmu in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several distinguished guests.

The Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, was given to the celebrated actor in recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema, especially Bengali films.

Prosenjit attended the ceremony dressed in elegant traditional Bengali attire featuring a cream-colored kurta. He received the medal and citation with folded hands as the audience applauded his decades-long contribution to the entertainment industry.

The actor was among the 113 Padma Shri awardees announced as part of the Padma Awards 2026 list released by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day.

Representing West Bengal in the Art category, Prosenjit Chatterjee’s recognition has been widely celebrated by fans and members of the film fraternity across the country.

After the announcement earlier this year, the actor shared an emotional message expressing gratitude for the honour. In a video statement, he thanked the Government of India and acknowledged everyone who contributed to his journey over the past four decades.

He said the award was not only his personal achievement but also belonged to the directors, producers, co-stars, technicians, and audiences who supported him throughout his career. Prosenjit also dedicated the honour to his late mother.

Born on September 30, 1962, Prosenjit Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential stars in Bengali cinema. Popularly known among fans as “Mr. Industry,” he has played a major role in shaping modern Bengali films.

He began his acting journey as a child artist in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1968 film Chotto Jigyasa. His breakthrough as a lead actor came with the 1987 blockbuster Amar Sangi, which established him as a major star in Bengali cinema.

In 1990, he made his Bollywood debut with Aandhiyan and later expanded his career across multiple languages including Bengali, Hindi, and Odia cinema. Over the years, he has appeared in more than 250 films.

Some of his most acclaimed performances include films like Chokher Bali, Autograph, Baishe Srabon, and Moner Manush. He also earned praise for Hindi projects such as Shanghai, Jubilee, and Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.

Coming from a film family, Prosenjit is the son of veteran actor, director, and producer Biswajit Chatterjee and actress Ratna Chatterjee.

Apart from the Padma Shri, the actor has received several prestigious honours during his career, including two National Film Awards, five Filmfare Awards, and six Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards.

He was also honoured with the Mahanayak Samman in 2013 and the Banga Bibhushan award in 2018. Prosenjit continues to hold the record for winning the highest number of Best Actor awards in the history of the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards.

With a legacy spanning more than four decades, Prosenjit Chatterjee remains one of the most respected and celebrated names in Indian cinema.
