Content creator and actor Niharika NM says growing up outside conventional beauty standards played a crucial role in shaping her confidence and strengths beyond physical appearance.
Reflecting on her early years, Niharika recalls how representation on screen felt limited and exclusionary. “Growing up, women with brown skin like me were rarely represented on screen. Being a chubby kid made me feel I wasn’t meant to be on screen,” she says. She adds that children who do not fit traditional beauty ideals are often ignored or bullied.
Rather than letting those experiences define her, Niharika chose to focus on developing her skills and personality. “So instead of letting that define me, I focused on building my skills and personality,” she explains.
Looking back, she believes that not fitting in helped her grow in unexpected ways. “Many kids who don’t fit conventional beauty standards grow into confident, talented adults because they develop strengths beyond how they look,” she says.

Add Hunterfly on GoogleAs her career expanded, Niharika also became more aware of the pressures that come with constant visibility, especially on social media. She notes that the impact of online exposure varies from person to person.
“I think it’s different for everyone. If you’re someone who gets pulled too deeply into the social media rabbit hole, it can definitely take a toll on your mental health,” she says, adding that she has experienced this herself at various points.
For Niharika, stepping back when needed has been essential. “At times, taking a step back is the best thing you can do for yourself, if that’s what you truly feel you need,” she adds.
