Netflix has unveiled its highly anticipated limited horror series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, the first post-Stranger Things project from Upside Down Pictures. Created by Haley Z. Boston and produced under the supervision of the Duffer Brothers, the eight-episode series follows a bride-to-be navigating fear, superstition, and increasingly sinister events during the week before her wedding.

Camila Morrone leads the cast as Rachel Harkin, who travels with her fiancé Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco) to his secluded family vacation home for their wedding. As the days progress, Rachel’s anxiety grows, compounded by strange occurrences that blur the line between reality and dread.

Duffer Brothers’ Role and the Creative Vision

Following the dramatic conclusion of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer are taking a mentorship role in their new slate of shows. “We’re finding talent and creatives that we deeply respect and helping them get the show off the ground,” Matt told Entertainment Weekly. “We teach them what we’ve learned so hopefully they don’t make the same mistakes. That’s sort of our role as far as that’s concerned.”

Haley Z. Boston, a former production assistant turned showrunner, helms Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen as her first major solo project. Boston draws inspiration from horror classics such as Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby, exploring a timeless fear: committing to the wrong partner. “It just felt so natural to me that you would explore the fear of commitment and the fear of marrying the wrong person through a horror lens,” Boston explains.

Storyline and Structure

The series tracks Rachel’s five-day countdown to her wedding, with each episode representing a single day. Her paranoia escalates as the home and family environment increasingly feel alien and threatening. Boston emphasizes that the narrative structure is designed to keep audiences disoriented, mirroring Rachel’s unease.

  • Day-by-day tension: Strange, escalating incidents unfold around Rachel, leaving viewers questioning what is real and what is imagined.
  • Familial and environmental dread: Boston cites influences ranging from The Vanishing (1988) and The Celebration (1998) to The White Lotus (2021) and Jonathan Demme’s works.
  • Psychological horror: The series delves into soulmate anxiety, the fear of marital commitment, and the unknown dynamics of a partner’s family.

Cast Highlights

  • Camila Morrone – Rachel Harkin
  • Adam DiMarco – Nicky Cunningham
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh – Victoria Cunningham (Nicky’s mother)
  • Ted Levine – Dr. Cunningham

Supporting cast includes Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, Gus Birney, Sawyer Fraser, and others, each tied to the central wedding narrative.

Creative Inspirations

Boston developed the series in 2020, drawing from personal experience and cultural fears surrounding marriage. “When I was a kid, my mom said, ‘You can do whatever you want, just make sure you don’t marry the wrong person.’ That pressure lingered with me,” Boston says. Her experience, paired with her interest in psychological horror, informs the show’s tension and character dynamics.

What to Expect

  • Genre: Psychological horror, thriller
  • Episodes: 8 (all dropping together on Netflix)
  • Premiere: March 26, 2026
  • Streaming: Exclusively on Netflix

Boston promises twists and surprises at every turn. “Something bad happens in every show, right? But here, we keep you guessing about what the very bad thing is,” she says. Supernatural elements, family secrets, and cosmic coincidences play into the suspense, but the central horror is deeply human: the anxiety of choosing the wrong partner.
