Mrunal Thakur Plans to Balance Bollywood and South Cinema

Mumbai: After earning acclaim in Telugu cinema with Sita Ramam and Hi Nanna, actor Mrunal Thakur says she has consciously decided to work across both Bollywood and the South Indian film industries.

Born in Dhule, Maharashtra, Mrunal began her career with television shows such as Mujhse Kuch Kehti… Yeh Khamoshiyaan and Kumkum Bhagya before transitioning to films. Her Telugu debut Sita Ramam, opposite Dulquer Salmaan, was widely appreciated, setting a strong benchmark. She followed it with Hi Nanna alongside Nani.

Expanding Across Languages

Mrunal shared that while earlier career plans did not always align with timing, she now feels ready to give equal focus to both industries. She is also exploring opportunities in Tamil cinema and is currently listening to scripts carefully, aiming for a project that matches the high standard set by her Telugu debut.

According to the actor, language is secondary to emotional storytelling. Comfortable with Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam, she believes strong narratives transcend linguistic boundaries.

Upcoming Hindi Release

Mrunal is preparing for the release of Do Deewane Seher Mein, directed by Ravi Udyawar, known for Mom. The romantic drama stars Siddhant Chaturvedi opposite her and explores the journey of two socially awkward millennials navigating love and personal insecurities.

She noted that the film allowed her to portray a contemporary character rooted in the 2020s—distinct from her earlier Hindi projects such as Super 30 and Batla House. Backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Zee Studios, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on February 20.

Working with David Dhawan

The actor also expressed excitement about collaborating with veteran filmmaker David Dhawan in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, where she stars alongside Varun Dhawan and Pooja Hegde. Calling it a “surreal” experience, she described herself as a long-time admirer of his cinema, citing Karisma Kapoor as her favourite leading lady from his films.

On Possible Collaboration with Atlee and Allu Arjun

Addressing speculation about joining a project tentatively titled AA22xA6, directed by Atlee and starring Allu Arjun, Mrunal said she is hopeful. She praised Allu Arjun’s performances in Pushpa: The Rise and Pushpa 2: The Rule, describing herself as an admirer of his craft and screen presence.

With projects spanning multiple languages and genres, Mrunal Thakur continues to position herself as a pan-Indian performer committed to balancing diverse cinematic landscapes.
