Few entertainers have ever created an image as instantly recognisable as Mr. T.

The gold jewellery. The mohawk. The sleeveless outfits. The intense stare. And, of course, the unmistakable voice that turned “I pity the fool” into one of television’s most memorable catchphrases.

For millions of viewers in the 1980s, Mr. T was more than an actor or professional wrestler. He was a cultural phenomenon.

Netflix’s latest entry in its Untold documentary series, Mr. T: I Pity the Fool, looks beyond that larger-than-life persona to explore the man behind it. Mr. T was born Laurence Tureaud and grew up in Chicago as one of a large family of siblings.

The success of Rocky III transformed Mr. T from a television curiosity into a major celebrity.

If Rocky III made Mr. T famous, The A-Team turned him into a television icon.

Beginning in 1983, the series followed a group of former military men who became fugitives and used their skills to help people in trouble.

Mr. T played Sergeant Bosco “B.A.” Baracus, the team’s intimidating mechanic and muscle.

The role fitted his image so perfectly that it became difficult to separate actor from character.

B.A.’s toughness, distinctive appearance and memorable expressions helped make The A-Team one of the defining action shows of its era.

Mr. T’s popularity expanded far beyond television.

He appeared on merchandise ranging from action figures and lunchboxes to food products and other licensed items. His fame also extended into music, animation and children’s entertainment.

The character had become a brand.

When Mr. T Became Bigger Than the Screen

The extraordinary success of the 1980s brought an unusual problem: there was increasingly little separation between Mr. T the entertainer and Mr. T the public personality.

His involvement was controversial among some wrestlers. His Hollywood celebrity status made him an unusual presence in a wrestling world that traditionally placed enormous value on performers who had spent years inside the business.

Nevertheless, Mr. T became part of one of the most commercially significant eras in professional wrestling.

Fame Also Had a Price

The Netflix documentary doesn’t present Mr. T’s rise as a simple story of uninterrupted success.

His fame eventually became so enormous that the persona itself could become excessive.
